Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed that activist Sonam Wangchuk be shifted from Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for further medical treatment.

The order was passed while hearing a petition filed by Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmo, who sought permission to transfer him to the private hospital for continued care.

Court Directs Transfer of Medical Records

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia directed Safdarjung Hospital to hand over all medical records, treatment documents, diagnostic reports, and other relevant files to Medanta Hospital.

The court said the transfer of records would ensure uninterrupted medical treatment and continuity of care after Wangchuk is shifted to the Gurugram-based hospital.

Court Says Transfer Protects Fundamental Rights

While allowing the transfer, the Delhi High Court observed that moving Wangchuk to Medanta Hospital would safeguard his fundamental rights.

The Bench also ordered the constitution of a team of qualified doctors to closely monitor his medical condition and oversee his treatment after the transfer.

Union Government Raised No Objection

During the hearing, the Union Government informed the Delhi High Court that it had no objection to Wangchuk being shifted to Medanta Hospital, provided the transfer was carried out according to medical advice.

The court took note of the government's submission before passing its order.

Wangchuk Was Admitted During Hunger Strike

Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after being taken from the Jantar Mantar protest site due to concerns over his health during his indefinite hunger strike.

Following the High Court's direction, his treatment will now continue at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram under medical supervision.

Gitanjali Angmo Welcomes Court's Decision

After the order, Wangchuk's wife Gitanjali Angmo thanked the Delhi High Court through a post on social media, expressing gratitude for allowing the transfer to the hospital chosen by the family.

Earlier, she had raised concerns regarding medical reports issued by Safdarjung Hospital and sought permission for her husband's treatment at Medanta.

Hunger Strike Continues

Before the court approved the transfer, Sonam Wangchuk had stated that he would continue his indefinite hunger strike until student representatives protesting over the alleged NEET-UG paper leak were allowed to meet Members of Parliament.

Meanwhile, representatives of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) met Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and submitted a memorandum outlining their demands. The delegation said discussions were held, but no formal assurance was given regarding their demands.
