Mangaluru MRPL Blast Triggers Fire and Panic, Several People Injured

A major industrial incident at Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) in Mangaluru, Karnataka, triggered panic across nearby areas on Wednesday, September 30, after a loud explosion was followed by a large plume of smoke from the refinery premises. The incident took place at the facility near Kuthethoor and Jokatte, an important industrial area on the outskirts of Mangaluru. According to reports emerging from the site, the incident involved the refinery's Coker Hydrotreater unit. A report citing information about the facility said a high-pressure cold separator ruptured, leading to the explosion and subsequent fire. Emergency teams immediately responded to the incident and worked to contain the flames. The sudden blast was powerful enough to be heard across several parts of Mangaluru. Residents in areas around Jokatte, Kavoor, Yeyyadi and other nearby locations reported hearing a loud boom. Thick smoke rising from the refinery could also be seen from a considerable distance, creating concern among people living close to the industrial complex.

Several People Reported Injured

Reports available later in the day indicated that several people sustained injuries in the incident. The Indian Express reported that eight people were injured, including one employee who suffered serious burn injuries and was receiving treatment. Other reports put the number of injured at around nine. Because the figures have varied across early reports, the final confirmed number should be treated as subject to official clarification. The incident therefore became a major Refinery Fire emergency, with firefighting and emergency response teams working at the location. Officials and emergency personnel were also monitoring the surrounding area while assessing the situation and possible damage.

Fire Brought Under Control

The fire following the blast was later reported to have been brought under control. Emergency response teams from the refinery acted quickly to prevent the situation from spreading to other sections of the facility. A report citing company information said the emergency and firefighting teams responded immediately after the incident. The exact sequence of events remains an important part of the ongoing assessment. Reports have pointed towards a rupture involving equipment in the Coker Hydrotreater unit, but authorities are expected to examine the equipment, operating conditions and safety systems before determining the precise cause.

Thick Smoke Raises Concern Among Residents

The thick smoke visible over the refinery became one of the most noticeable signs of the incident. Local residents described hearing a sudden and unusually loud sound, followed by smoke rising from the industrial premises. Earlier reports said that officials had not immediately released complete details about the cause or the extent of damage. The blast also caused concern over possible damage to nearby structures. Reports from local sources said the impact was felt in surrounding areas, although the full extent of property damage is still being assessed.

What Happens Next?

Authorities are expected to continue examining the affected unit and surrounding infrastructure to establish exactly what caused the explosion. The condition of the injured workers, the extent of equipment damage and any impact on refinery operations will remain key areas of attention. MRPL operates a major petroleum refining and petrochemical complex at Kuthethoor in Mangaluru and is a subsidiary of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited. For residents, the immediate priority remains safety and verified information. While the Mangaluru Explosion created widespread concern, the reported containment of the fire provides an important update as officials continue their assessment.
