Tibet Earthquake: 16 Dead, 32 Injured as 7.0 Quake Hits Nagqu

A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 struck China's Tibet Autonomous Region late on Thursday, October 22, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32 others, according to reports from Chinese state news agency Xinhua. Eleven of the injured were reported to be in serious condition, while the remaining 21 suffered comparatively minor injuries. The earthquake hit the northern part of Tibet, with its epicentre in a remote, high-altitude area associated with Nagqu City. The tremor caused widespread alarm, forcing residents to rush out of homes and other buildings in search of safety. Emergency teams were mobilised as reports of collapsed houses and damaged structures emerged from the affected region. The latest reported figures indicate that the disaster has caused significant loss of life and property. However, rescue operations and damage assessments are continuing, so the full impact of the earthquake may become clearer as authorities gather more information.

Where Was the Earthquake's Epicentre?

The Tibet earthquake struck at approximately 8:03 pm Indian Standard Time on Thursday, according to India's National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The epicentre was located in northern Tibet, around 400 kilometres from Lhasa, the regional capital. The depth of the earthquake has been reported differently by various sources. India's NCS listed the event at a depth of approximately 15 kilometres, while other reports placed it at around 10 kilometres. These figures differ from the 173-kilometre depth mentioned in some early reports, so the official seismic data should be checked when reporting the earthquake's precise depth. The remote location and high elevation of the affected area present additional challenges for emergency personnel. Rescue teams need to reach damaged settlements, locate people who may be trapped and determine which buildings remain safe for residents.

Hundreds of Houses Reportedly Collapsed

The earthquake caused serious structural damage in parts of Nagqu and nearby settlements. According to local government information reported by Chinese media, at least 339 homes had collapsed following the tremor. The destruction has left affected residents in urgent need of shelter and assistance. People fled their houses as the ground shook, with some seeking safety outdoors or inside vehicles. Footage carried by local media showed residents leaving buildings and moving into open areas. Reports also described objects falling from shop shelves as the tremors shook buildings. Such scenes reflect the sudden force of the earthquake and the fear experienced by people caught inside homes and commercial premises. The reported collapse of hundreds of houses has made search-and-rescue work a priority. Emergency personnel are working to check damaged buildings and identify people who may require immediate medical attention. Authorities are also assessing the condition of structures to determine whether residents can safely return to their homes.

Rescue Operations Continue in the Affected Region

Rescue teams have been deployed to areas affected by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Their immediate priorities include searching damaged buildings, helping injured residents, providing emergency assistance and identifying people who may still be missing or trapped. Medical support is especially important because 11 of the 32 injured people were reported to be in serious condition. The injured require assessment and treatment, while emergency workers must continue checking communities where homes have collapsed. Temporary shelters are also being arranged for people whose houses have been damaged or destroyed. Tents and other emergency accommodation can provide short-term protection while officials assess the damage and determine what support affected families need. The scale of the destruction means the response involves more than the initial rescue effort. Authorities also need to assess housing damage, restore essential services where disrupted and ensure that displaced residents can access food, water, medical care and safe shelter. The rescue operation remains a key part of the response as officials work to establish the full extent of the disaster. Information about casualties and damage may change as teams reach additional locations and complete their assessments.

One of the Strongest Earthquakes to Hit China in Recent Years

The earthquake was reported as the strongest to strike China since January 2024. Its magnitude and the reported collapse of hundreds of homes have made it a major disaster for the region. The severity of an earthquake depends on several factors, including its magnitude, depth, distance from populated areas, local ground conditions and the strength of buildings. Even when an earthquake occurs in a sparsely populated region, damaged roads, difficult terrain and long distances between settlements can complicate rescue operations. Northern Tibet is a high-altitude region where access to some locations can be difficult. These geographical conditions can slow the delivery of emergency supplies and make it harder for rescue teams to reach isolated communities. The latest earthquake death toll stands at 16, with 32 people reported injured. Authorities are continuing to examine the affected area, and further details may emerge as rescue and relief work progresses.

Why Is Tibet Vulnerable to Earthquakes?

Tibet lies in one of the world's seismically active regions. Its geological setting is closely linked to the collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The continuing movement and pressure associated with these plates have contributed to the formation and uplift of the Himalayan mountain system and the Tibetan Plateau. Tectonic plates move slowly, but the stress that builds along faults in the Earth's crust can eventually be released suddenly. When rocks shift along a fault, energy travels through the ground in the form of seismic waves. These waves cause the shaking people experience during an earthquake. The strength of the shaking at a particular location is not determined by magnitude alone. The depth of the event, the distance from the epicentre, the type of ground beneath buildings and the construction quality of structures all influence the damage. Earthquake preparedness is therefore important in high-risk areas. Stronger building standards, public awareness, emergency drills, clear evacuation routes and rapid communication can help reduce risks when a major tremor occurs.

Earlier Disasters Have Also Affected the Wider Region

The latest earthquake comes amid wider concerns about natural disasters in the Himalayan region and areas near the Nepal-China border. Floods and landslides have affected communities in parts of the region in recent weeks, highlighting the difficulties faced by people living in mountainous terrain. However, the earthquake and earlier flooding or landslides are separate events. The extent of damage, casualties and recovery needs must be assessed individually for each affected area. In another recent incident reported in September, an avalanche near the base camp of Himlung Himal in Nepal left several people missing. Such incidents underline the range of natural hazards faced by communities, climbers and rescue teams in high mountain environments.
