Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee was suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Monsoon Session on Wednesday following allegations that he made objectionable remarks against women Members of Parliament during a heated exchange inside the House.

The decision was announced after the Lok Sabha reconvened following its second adjournment of the day. The current Monsoon Session is scheduled to continue until August 13, 2026.

Suspension Approved Through Voice Vote

Presiding Officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti informed the House that complaints had been submitted to the Speaker regarding Banerjee's alleged remarks.

He stated that the comments had affected the dignity of the House and asked Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal to move a resolution seeking Banerjee's suspension.

The resolution was passed through a voice vote amid protests and sloganeering by opposition members over the NEET paper leak issue and other matters.

Following the House's approval, the presiding officer directed Kalyan Banerjee to leave the Lok Sabha chamber.

Heated Exchange Inside the House

The controversy followed a heated verbal exchange between Banerjee and several Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) MPs after the House was adjourned earlier in the day.

According to reports, the members involved included Mitali Bagh, Shatabdi Roy, and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar.

The exact reason behind the confrontation was not immediately clear. Other opposition MPs reportedly intervened to calm the situation before Banerjee left the House.

Following the incident, NCPI MPs met Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and raised objections regarding Banerjee's alleged remarks.

According to parliamentary sources, the Speaker asked the members to submit a formal written complaint detailing the incident.

The complaint later formed the basis for the resolution seeking Banerjee's suspension from the remainder of the session.

Political Background

The incident comes against the backdrop of political changes within the Lok Sabha after several former TMC MPs joined the NCPI following the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Those members now sit separately from the Trinamool Congress benches, reflecting the changing political dynamics inside Parliament.
