Assam's flood situation worsened on Thursday as heavy rainfall and rising river levels claimed 10 more lives within 24 hours, taking the total death toll from this year's floods to 41. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 6.53 lakh people have been affected across 11 districts, while the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of more rainfall in the coming days.

10 Deaths Reported Across Five Districts

ASDMA said Sivasagar and Jorhat recorded three deaths each during the past 24 hours. Charaideo reported two fatalities, while Karbi Anglong and Dhemaji recorded one death each. Earlier, one person had also lost their life in Guwahati due to the flood situation.

Sivasagar Remains the Worst-Hit District

The floods have affected over 6,53,100 people in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong and Nagaon districts.

Sivasagar remains the worst-hit district, with nearly four lakh residents impacted. Charaideo has over 1.11 lakh affected people, while Jorhat has more than 97,000 residents facing severe flooding.

Hundreds of Villages Under Water

Floodwaters have inundated 939 villages across the state and damaged nearly 24,897 hectares of agricultural land. The disaster has disrupted transportation, farming and daily life in several districts.

To support affected families, the state government is operating 487 relief camps and distribution centres across 10 districts, providing shelter and assistance to more than 24,400 displaced people.

Rescue Operations Continue

The Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Fire and Emergency Services, police and local civil authorities have rescued more than 8,500 people from the worst-affected districts, including Charaideo, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong and Sivasagar.

Meanwhile, the Buridihing, Dikhou, Dhansiri and Kushiyara rivers are flowing above the danger level, while the Disang River at Nanglamuraghat has crossed its highest recorded flood level, increasing the risk of further flooding.

IMD Issues Orange Alert

The India Meteorological Department has issued an Orange Alert for Assam, urging residents to remain prepared for severe weather conditions. A Yellow Alert has also been issued for the following four days, with forecasts of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning at isolated locations.

Authorities have warned that continued rainfall could worsen flooding in already affected districts.

Chief Secretary Reviews Relief Measures

Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota reviewed the flood situation on Wednesday and instructed all departments to speed up relief distribution, repair damaged infrastructure and restore essential services.

He also directed officials to strengthen coordination with the Indian Army, Air Force and NDRF to ensure faster rescue operations and minimise hardships for flood-affected communities.
