Assam Floods Affect Over 22,000 People, Train Services Suspended After Railway Bridge Damage

Assam Floods 2026 has affected more than 22,000 people across six districts after continuous heavy rainfall triggered widespread flooding and riverbank erosion. The floods have damaged homes, submerged farmland, disrupted railway services, and forced authorities to launch relief operations across the state.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of 22,124 people have been affected in Dhemaji, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Lakhimpur, and Kokrajhar districts. Dhemaji remains the worst-hit district, with more than 15,400 residents facing severe flooding.

Railway Bridge Damaged, Train Services Suspended

Heavy rainfall and severe riverbank erosion have damaged a railway bridge between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations, forcing the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to suspend train operations until further notice.

Railway officials said one of the bridge's supporting piers became unstable after floodwaters washed away a large portion of the riverbank. Although the bridge had been declared structurally safe before the monsoon, the unexpected erosion created safety concerns.

Fortunately, no trains were damaged and no passengers were injured because train movement had already been stopped as a precaution.

Services between Murkongselek and Silapathar under the Tinsukia Division will remain suspended. Several trains will now originate or terminate at Silapathar until repair work is completed.

To assist passengers, the railway has arranged special bus services and established help desks at Dhemaji, Silapathar, and Murkongselek railway stations.

Floodwaters Submerge Villages and Farmland

The flood situation continues to worsen across Assam as overflowing rivers inundate villages and agricultural fields.

According to ASDMA:

96 villages are underwater.
Nearly 1,690 hectares of farmland have been damaged.
More than 48,000 livestock have been affected.

Farmers have suffered significant crop losses just as the kharif cultivation season begins, raising concerns about agricultural production in the coming months.

Brahmaputra and Disang Rivers Continue Rising

Continuous rainfall in Assam and neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh has caused the Brahmaputra River and several tributaries to rise rapidly.

Officials reported that the Disang River is flowing above the danger mark at Nanglamuraghat in Sivasagar district. Disaster management teams remain on alert as weather forecasts indicate additional rainfall, increasing the risk of further flooding.

Assam Government Launches Relief Operations

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government is closely monitoring the flood situation and has directed officials to ensure immediate relief reaches affected families.

The Chief Minister stated that rescue teams, district administrations, and disaster response agencies have been mobilized to protect residents and provide food, shelter, and medical assistance.

He also assured that rehabilitation measures would be taken once floodwaters recede.

Impact on Transportation

Flooding has severely affected transportation in eastern Assam.

Railway authorities continue to inspect damaged infrastructure while coordinating with state officials to restore train services safely. Passengers are advised to check updated train schedules before travelling.

Road connectivity in several low-lying villages has also been disrupted due to waterlogging and damaged roads.
