Maharashtra Floods: Thousands of LPG Cylinders Drift Away, Collector Issues Urgent Safety Warning

Heavy monsoon rains have created a dangerous situation in Maharashtra after thousands of LPG cylinders were swept away by floodwaters in one of the state's flood-hit districts. Dramatic videos circulating on social media showed hundreds of gas cylinders floating rapidly through overflowing rivers, drawing widespread attention and raising serious safety concerns among residents.

According to district officials, the cylinders were washed away after floodwaters entered an LPG storage and distribution area. The strong current carried the cylinders downstream, prompting authorities to launch an emergency recovery operation to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

Collector Warns Residents to Stay Away

Following the incident, the district collector issued an urgent advisory asking people not to touch, move, or attempt to recover any floating LPG cylinders.

Officials warned that prolonged exposure to floodwaters could damage the valves or safety mechanisms of the cylinders, increasing the possibility of gas leakage. Any mishandling could lead to fire, explosion, or serious injuries.

Residents have instead been asked to immediately inform the local administration, fire department, police, or the concerned LPG distributor if they notice any cylinder floating in rivers, canals, or flooded areas.

Rescue Teams Launch Recovery Operation

The district administration, along with the fire department, police, and disaster response teams, has begun an extensive operation to recover the drifting cylinders. Boats and specialised equipment are being used to retrieve the cylinders safely from rivers and flood-affected locations.

Authorities said every recovered cylinder will undergo a thorough safety inspection before being returned to service. Damaged cylinders will be isolated and disposed of according to established safety protocols.

Officials are also monitoring downstream areas to ensure the cylinders do not pose a threat to nearby villages or residential communities.

Heavy Rain Continues Across Maharashtra

Several districts in Maharashtra have witnessed continuous heavy rainfall over the past few days, leading to flooding, waterlogging, landslides, and disruptions to transport services. Rising river levels have forced the evacuation of residents from low-lying areas, while emergency teams continue rescue and relief operations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rainfall across parts of Maharashtra, prompting authorities to remain on high alert. Local administrations have advised people to avoid flooded roads, overflowing rivers, and areas vulnerable to landslides.

Administration Appeals for Public Cooperation

Authorities have urged residents not to spread rumours or attempt to retrieve the cylinders for personal use. Officials stressed that only trained personnel equipped with proper safety gear should handle LPG cylinders found in floodwaters.

The administration also appealed to fishermen, farmers, and people living near rivers to immediately report any floating cylinders to emergency services. Public cooperation, officials said, will play a crucial role in preventing accidents during the ongoing flood situation.

As recovery efforts continue, the district administration remains focused on ensuring the safe retrieval of the cylinders while carrying out relief operations for people affected by the floods.
