Bihar Policeman Suspended After Firing AK-47 During Student Protest

A police constable in Bihar has been suspended after firing an AK-47 rifle into the air while attempting to disperse student protesters in Siwan, according to senior police officials.

The incident occurred during demonstrations linked to the alleged NEET examination paper leak, adding to growing concerns over the handling of student protests across the country.

AK-47 Fired During Protest

Videos circulating on social media showed a police officer in riot gear running toward protesters while pointing an AK-47 rifle and firing at least three rounds into the air.

Bihar Police later confirmed the authenticity of the videos and said the weapon was issued to the constable because he belonged to an intelligence unit that normally deals with high-risk criminal operations.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Nilesh Kumar said the use of the assault rifle during a student protest was unjustified.

He stated that the constable had been suspended immediately and that further disciplinary action would follow. Officials also confirmed that no injuries were reported in the incident.

Student Protests Continue

The demonstrations were triggered by allegations surrounding the NEET medical entrance examination paper leak, which affected more than 2 million candidates and led to a re-examination.

The protests later expanded to include broader issues raised by students, including concerns over youth unemployment, recruitment transparency and the future impact of artificial intelligence on employment opportunities.

Political Reactions

The incident was raised in Parliament, where opposition leaders criticized the use of force against student demonstrators.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called for accountability, describing the reported use of an assault rifle during a student protest as deeply concerning.

Parliament proceedings were disrupted as members debated the issue.

Concerns Over Democratic Rights

The police response has drawn criticism from civil society and legal observers.

In a public address, Supreme Court Judge Ujjal Bhuyan said the space for expressing differing opinions and peaceful protest in India appeared to be shrinking, emphasizing that peaceful demonstration is a fundamental democratic right.

Investigation Underway

Bihar Police have launched disciplinary proceedings against the suspended constable.

Authorities said the incident is being investigated to determine whether additional action is warranted while reaffirming that the firing was inappropriate under the circumstances.
