Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that the Centre will introduce legislation providing for fast-track courts and stricter punishment for those involved in examination paper leaks, as protests over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak continue across the country.

In a video message, the Prime Minister acknowledged the concerns of students and parents, saying the government understands the seriousness of examination irregularities and is committed to strengthening accountability.

Government Prioritised Students' Academic Year

Modi said the government's first priority was to ensure that students did not lose an academic year because of the controversy.

According to the Prime Minister, authorities worked to conduct examinations for nearly 22 lakh students in the shortest possible time and later completed the declaration of results to minimise disruption to academic schedules.

He added that while examinations and results had been completed, the government would continue taking action against those responsible for paper leaks.

Fast-Track Courts and Tougher Punishment Planned

The Prime Minister said he has directed government departments to prepare a legal framework establishing fast-track courts for paper leak cases and introducing stronger penalties for offenders.

The proposed legislation will first be considered by the Union Cabinet before being introduced in Parliament. The government aims to seek its passage during the current parliamentary session.

Protests Continue at Jantar Mantar

The announcement comes as demonstrations led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) continue at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, greater accountability in the examination system and reforms to prevent future paper leaks.

The movement gained further attention after activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his 26-day hunger strike following government assurances on parliamentary discussions, compensation for affected families and protection for peaceful protesters.

Security Tightened in Central Delhi

Authorities have deployed heavy security around Jantar Mantar as protests continue. Restrictions have also been imposed in parts of central Delhi, with increased police presence and temporary changes to traffic and public transport arrangements to maintain law and order.

The government's proposed legislation is expected to become a key part of ongoing discussions on education reforms and examination transparency.
