Man Detained After Disrupting Supreme Court Proceedings and Abusing CJI

An unusual scene unfolded inside the Supreme Court when a man appearing as a petitioner allegedly used abusive language against the Chief Justice of India (CJI) and threw papers inside the courtroom during the hearing of his case.

The individual, identified as Prabal Pratap from Lucknow, was immediately restrained and removed from the courtroom by security personnel after the disruption. The incident shocked lawyers and others present during the proceedings.

Petitioner Appeared in Person Before the Bench

Prabal Pratap was arguing his own case before a bench comprising Justices K.V. Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe.

At the beginning of the hearing, the petitioner addressed the bench in an unusual manner and made statements directing the court to order the registration of an FIR against a police officer and a private company.

The judges questioned his remarks, but he continued his submissions before suddenly throwing a bundle of papers into the courtroom and making abusive comments directed at the Chief Justice of India.

Security Personnel Quickly Intervened

Delhi Police personnel stationed inside the courtroom immediately intervened and escorted the petitioner out to prevent further disruption.

The unexpected incident briefly interrupted court proceedings as lawyers present in the courtroom watched the events unfold.

Court Reviews Petition Despite Disruption

After the petitioner was removed, the bench resumed hearing the matter in his absence.

The case related to a challenge against an order of the Allahabad High Court concerning a criminal complaint filed by the petitioner. After examining the record, the Supreme Court found no reason to interfere with the High Court's decision and dismissed the appeal.

Bench Raises Questions Over Fitness Assessment

During the hearing, the judges also questioned how the petitioner had earlier been certified as fit to argue his case in person under the Supreme Court Rules.

The concerned court registrar was asked to explain the assessment process after the bench noted the petitioner's conduct during the proceedings.

Following a brief interaction, the court observed that the petitioner appeared to behave incoherently during the hearing.

Court Decides Against Taking Further Action

While taking serious note of the disruption and the use of inappropriate language inside the courtroom, the bench decided not to initiate further legal action against the petitioner.

The judges observed that the petitioner's behaviour suggested possible mental health concerns and said they did not wish to proceed with punitive measures in view of his apparent condition.

The court emphasized that instead of presenting legal arguments, the petitioner made incoherent statements and disrupted the proceedings, but ultimately chose to dispose of the matter without pursuing additional action.
