Sonam Wangchuk has released his first video after ending his 26-day hunger strike, saying the fast may have ended but the demand for accountability in India's examination system will continue.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Wangchuk said he decided to break his fast after receiving assurances from the central government during a meeting with Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh.

Government Gives Three Key Assurances

According to Wangchuk, the government agreed to address three major concerns raised during the protest.

The first assurance was that Parliament would discuss accountability and reforms related to the country's examination system, including issues surrounding the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak.

Secondly, the government assured that the families of students who reportedly died by suicide in connection with the controversy would receive appropriate compensation.

The third assurance was that no legal action would be taken against students and activists who participated peacefully in protests at Jantar Mantar and the march to Parliament.

Fast Ended After Meeting With Union Ministers

Wangchuk officially ended his hunger strike shortly after midnight on July 24 at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram following discussions with the two Union ministers.

In a statement shared on social media, he said the decision came after extensive negotiations and support from Members of Parliament across political parties.

Wangchuk also urged supporters to maintain peace and avoid any form of violence, adding that he would soon release another video explaining the conditions under which the fast was ended.

Prime Minister Modi Wishes Wangchuk Good Health

Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed Wangchuk's decision to end the hunger strike and wished him a speedy recovery.

In a message on social media, the Prime Minister urged Wangchuk to follow medical advice, regain his health and recover fully.

Parliament to Discuss Education Reforms

Union Minister JP Nadda reiterated that the government is prepared to hold discussions in Parliament on examination reforms and the recent paper leak controversy.

He also said the government is positively considering compensation for affected families and remains committed to ensuring that peaceful protesters are not subjected to legal action.

The developments mark a significant step in ongoing discussions over examination reforms, while student groups continue to seek greater transparency and accountability in the education system.
