India’s second Test against Sri Lanka at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo ended in a draw after the hosts produced a determined batting effort to deny India a chance of victory.

India entered the final phase of the match with a strong opportunity to force a result. Sri Lanka had only four wickets remaining and held a 16-run lead at the start of the day. However, the hosts showed remarkable patience and gradually took control of the contest.

Sonal Dinusha became the key figure in Sri Lanka’s resistance. His century gave the hosts the confidence to continue batting despite losing wickets and facing pressure from the Indian attack.

Dinusha completed his century during the third session, producing one of the most important innings of the match for Sri Lanka. His performance helped the hosts survive against an Indian side searching for the final wicket.

With his century, Dinusha became only the third Sri Lankan batter after Aravinda de Silva and Kumar Sangakkara to score three centuries in a two-match Test series.

Sri Lanka continued batting even after reaching a position where a declaration could have created an opportunity for both teams to chase a result. The hosts eventually declared with around 15 overs remaining, but India chose not to pursue a difficult chase.

India Fail to Take Final Wicket

India used several options in an attempt to break the partnership and complete the victory. Captain Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal also bowled in an effort to find the breakthrough.

However, Sri Lanka continued to resist and refused to collapse despite losing nine wickets.

India had dominated several stages of the match after scoring 503 runs in their first innings. Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel both scored centuries, putting India in a commanding position.

Sri Lanka were then dismissed for 290, giving India a significant advantage and raising hopes of an innings victory.

India’s Strategy Comes Under Question

India’s decision-making with the bat could come under scrutiny after the visitors posted a huge first-innings total.

With rain threatening to affect the Test, an earlier declaration might have given India more time to bowl Sri Lanka out and push for a result. Instead, India appeared to focus on building a substantial advantage before attempting to force an innings victory.

That strategy initially looked effective after Sri Lanka were dismissed for 290. However, the pitch became increasingly favourable for batting, making it difficult for India to finish the job.

The final result leaves India with a draw despite controlling large parts of the match.

Pasindu Sooriyabandara Makes Important Contribution

Pasindu Sooriyabandara also played an important role in Sri Lanka’s fightback. He scored 80 in one innings and 92 in the other during the Colombo Test.

His consistency, combined with Dinusha’s century, allowed Sri Lanka to withstand sustained pressure from India and secure a valuable draw.

For Sri Lanka, avoiding defeat after being placed under significant pressure will be viewed as a major achievement.

WTC Qualification Race Becomes More Complicated

The drawn Test could have consequences for India’s World Test Championship qualification campaign. India had entered the match looking to strengthen its position, but the inability to secure victory means valuable points have been left on the table.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, can take confidence from their ability to withstand India’s bowling attack and force a result that appeared unlikely earlier in the match.

The Colombo Test ultimately highlighted the importance of patience and decision-making in Test cricket. India created several opportunities to take control, but Sri Lanka’s lower-order resistance, led by Dinusha, ensured that the visitors could not complete the victory.
