South India Rain Alert: Storms and Heavy Rain Likely With 50 Kmph Winds

India is expected to see sharply contrasting weather conditions on September 30, with several southern and northeastern states likely to receive rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds, while much of northwest India is expected to remain largely dry. The latest IMD Weather Forecast indicates that isolated heavy rainfall is possible over parts of South India and the Northeast. The weather department has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds in several locations. In Kerala, the India Meteorological Department has specifically forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph, along with isolated heavy rainfall. The changing weather pattern comes as multiple atmospheric systems influence different parts of the country. While the southern peninsula and northeastern states remain under the influence of rain-producing systems, Delhi-NCR and several northwestern states are expected to experience comparatively dry conditions.

South India Under Rain and Thunderstorm Watch

The southern peninsula is likely to remain one of the main areas of weather activity on September 30. According to the forecast, parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe, Karnataka and coastal Andhra Pradesh may experience rain and thunderstorms. Some areas could also receive isolated heavy rainfall. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal may see thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching around 40–50 kmph. Similar conditions are possible in parts of Kerala and Mahe. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and some interior areas of Karnataka may also experience thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds. In parts of Andhra Pradesh, strong winds near the surface are also possible.

Kerala May See More Rain in Early October

Kerala is likely to remain one of the key areas to watch as the month changes. The weather department has indicated that heavy rainfall may continue at isolated locations in Kerala and Mahe from October 1 to October 5. This means that residents in rain-prone and low-lying areas may continue to experience wet conditions even after September comes to an end. The possibility of thunderstorms and strong winds also adds another weather concern. Lightning activity can increase risks for people outdoors, while sudden gusts may affect traffic, temporary structures and local travel.

Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Also Face Thunderstorm Risk

Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal are expected to experience thunderstorms and lightning at some places, with strong winds potentially reaching 40–50 kmph. Parts of Karnataka may also receive rain and thunderstorms. The forecast indicates that some interior areas could see gusty winds in the 30–40 kmph range. Coastal Karnataka is also expected to remain under a wet-weather watch around the beginning of October, with the possibility of heavier rainfall in some locations. For residents and commuters, sudden thunderstorms can result in short-duration intense rain, reduced visibility and difficult road conditions. Weather conditions can also change quickly during thunderstorm activity, making local forecasts important for people planning outdoor travel.

Northeast India Could Also Receive Heavy Rain

The weather activity is not limited to southern India. Several northeastern states are also expected to experience rain and thunderstorms. Assam and Meghalaya may receive isolated heavy rainfall on September 30. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are also likely to experience rain and thunderstorm activity. Lightning and gusty winds may accompany thunderstorms in parts of the region. Rainfall is expected to continue into the first few days of October, although the intensity and geographical spread may vary from state to state. The Heavy Rainfall forecast makes the Northeast another important region to monitor as October begins.

Delhi-NCR and Northwest India Likely to Stay Mostly Dry

While southern and northeastern India face rain activity, the weather pattern is expected to be significantly different across northwest India. Delhi-NCR, Haryana, Chandigarh, Punjab, Rajasthan and most parts of Uttar Pradesh are expected to remain mainly dry on September 30. Some isolated rainfall may still occur in eastern Rajasthan and eastern Uttar Pradesh around September 29–30, but the broader forecast points towards mostly dry weather in these areas during the following days. This creates a clear contrast between the two major weather zones, with rain activity concentrated mainly in the southern peninsula and Northeast while much of northwest India experiences relatively stable and dry conditions.

Why Is India's Weather Changing Across Regions?

Several atmospheric systems are contributing to the contrasting weather pattern. According to the weather outlook, a depression that had developed near the coastal areas of Myanmar and the adjoining Bay of Bengal was moving north-northwestwards and was expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area. The system was forecast to continue moving towards southeastern Bangladesh and adjoining northeastern areas. This system is one of the factors supporting rainfall activity over parts of Northeast India. At the same time, a western disturbance and associated upper-air systems were present over parts of northern India. Another circulation and trough were influencing southern parts of the country. The interaction and movement of these systems are contributing to different weather conditions across India.

Heavy Rain Was Already Recorded in Haryana

Despite the forecast of generally dry weather over northwest India on September 30, some parts of the region had already experienced significant rainfall. The weather department recorded heavy to very heavy rainfall at some locations in Haryana during the previous 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning. This shows why a broad regional forecast does not necessarily mean every location will remain completely dry. Localised weather systems can still produce intense rainfall over individual districts even when the overall regional outlook is for dry conditions. Residents should therefore continue to follow district-level weather updates, especially when thunderstorms or sudden rainfall are possible.

What to Expect as October Begins

The beginning of October is expected to maintain the weather contrast between different parts of India. Kerala and Mahe are likely to remain under a period of increased rainfall activity, while parts of coastal Karnataka may also receive heavier showers during the first couple of days of October. Southern states may continue to experience thunderstorms and lightning, while the Northeast is expected to see additional rain activity. At the same time, much of northwest India is expected to remain comparatively dry. This transition period is important because weather conditions can change quickly during the final phase of the southwest monsoon and the shift towards October weather patterns.

Safety During Thunderstorms and Strong Winds

People in areas under thunderstorm warnings should take basic precautions during periods of lightning and strong winds. Residents are advised to avoid open areas during lightning activity and stay indoors whenever possible. People travelling by road should also remain alert because sudden rain can reduce visibility and make roads slippery. Strong winds can also affect loose objects, temporary structures and outdoor advertisements. Local authorities and residents in vulnerable areas should remain attentive to fresh weather warnings if conditions intensify.

What is the South India rain forecast for September 30?

The South India Rain Alert indicates rain, thunderstorms and isolated heavy rainfall over parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, with strong winds possible in several areas.

Which states may receive heavy rainfall?

Isolated heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Kerala and Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and northeastern states including Assam and Meghalaya, according to the weather outlook.

Where can winds reach 40–50 kmph?

Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph are forecast at some places in Kerala, while similar strong winds are possible over parts of Tamil Nadu and adjoining southern areas.
