Saif Ali Khan Attack Case: Accused Again Seeks Guilty Plea

The man accused of stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his residence in Mumbai has once again approached the court seeking permission to plead guilty to the charges against him. The latest application was submitted on Thursday, October 8, 2026, nearly a month after a Mumbai court rejected his earlier request and directed that the case proceed to trial. The accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam, is a Bangladeshi national who was arrested in connection with the alleged attack on January 16, 2025. He remains in judicial custody as the legal proceedings continue. According to a report by Press Trust of India (PTI), Islam again informed the court that he intended to admit guilt on all charges filed against him. The development has brought renewed attention to the Saif Ali Khan attack case, which drew widespread public attention following the incident at the actor's Bandra residence.

What Happened During the January 2025 Attack?

The incident took place on January 16, 2025, inside Saif Ali Khan's apartment in the upscale Bandra neighbourhood of Mumbai. According to the case details reported at the time, an intruder allegedly entered the actor's residence and attacked him with a knife. The 54-year-old actor sustained multiple stab wounds and required emergency medical treatment. He was taken to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors performed surgery to treat his injuries. Khan remained under medical care before being discharged five days after the incident. The attack prompted widespread concern about residential security and safety in Mumbai, particularly after details emerged about the alleged intrusion into the actor's home.

Mumbai Court Had Rejected His Earlier Guilty Plea

The latest application follows an earlier attempt by the accused to plead guilty. On September 11, 2026, a Mumbai court rejected his previous application and ruled that he would face trial. The rejection meant that the case was not concluded through the earlier request. Islam has now approached the court again, expressing his intention to admit the charges brought against him. A request to plead guilty is not the same as a court formally accepting that plea. The court must follow the applicable legal procedure before determining the effect of any admission on the case. The latest development also raises procedural questions about the accused's communication with the authorities of his home country. The court's direction to prison officials to contact the Bangladesh embassy may help facilitate the requested communication.

Court Directs Prison Officials to Contact Bangladesh Embassy

During the proceedings, Additional Sessions Judge G. P. Deshmukh directed prison authorities to formally communicate with the Bangladesh embassy and facilitate contact between Islam and the diplomatic mission. The direction came after the accused again expressed his intention to plead guilty to all charges. The court's order concerns communication with the embassy and should not be interpreted as an acceptance of guilt or a final ruling in the criminal case. As a Bangladeshi national facing criminal proceedings in India, Islam's case also involves provisions relating to foreign nationals and entry into the country. The court will continue to handle the matter under the applicable Indian legal framework. Further details about any response from the embassy or the next procedural steps were not included in the initial report.
