Delhi Police Seeks Closure of 57 Metro Stations Ahead of CJP Protest

Delhi Police has asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to temporarily close the entry and exit gates at 57 metro stations in the national capital ahead of a planned demonstration by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The proposed restrictions are intended to prevent crowd movement towards sensitive locations as authorities prepare for the protest scheduled for Saturday, October 10, 2026. According to a letter sent on Thursday by Rajneesh Gupta, Joint Commissioner of Police for the Transport Range, the entry and exit gates at the identified stations may remain closed from 9 PM on Friday, October 9, until Saturday, October 10, or until the situation returns to normal. The police have also suggested that the frequency of metro trains passing through the affected stations could be reduced, depending on the security situation. The request covers 57 stations across the Delhi Metro network, which operates more than 300 stations.

Why Has Delhi Police Requested Metro Restrictions?

The proposed restrictions come ahead of a protest called by the CJP against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The group plans to demonstrate at Jantar Mantar and other locations in Delhi on Saturday. The CJP has raised allegations of irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and is demanding Kumar's resignation. These allegations are the stated basis of the group's protest campaign and should not be treated as established findings without independent verification. Police officials have cited the possibility of large or unruly crowds moving towards sensitive locations as the reason for seeking restrictions at metro stations. Closing station gates, if implemented, could help authorities manage access to areas expected to experience increased security activity.

The proposed list includes stations serving central Delhi, government and administrative areas, major interchange points, educational neighbourhoods and residential areas. Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat, Kashmere Gate and Mandi House are among the stations that commuters may want to monitor closely because restrictions could affect onward journeys. However, the police request should not be interpreted as confirmation that all 57 stations will definitely close. The final operational decision and any station-specific instructions need to be confirmed through official DMRC announcements.

Police Deny Permission for CJP Demonstration at Jantar Mantar

Delhi Police has reportedly denied permission for the proposed CJP demonstration at Jantar Mantar. Officials cited the late submission of the application and alleged violations of rules during an earlier demonstration. According to the report, police received the application on October 7, only three days before the planned event. Authorities said applications for such demonstrations must generally be submitted at least 10 days in advance. The denial of permission is a separate development from the request to DMRC. Even when permission for a gathering is denied, police may still prepare security arrangements if they anticipate that people could assemble or attempt to reach the proposed protest location.

What Is the CJP Protesting Against?

The Cockroach Janta Party has called for demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities associated with the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. The CJP is described in the report as a youth-led protest movement founded by Abhijeet Dipke in May. The group previously held a similar demonstration against Kumar at Mumbai's Shivaji Park the previous week. The party's demands concern the electoral roll revision process and the role of the Chief Election Commissioner. The allegations remain claims made by the protesting group; their accuracy would need to be assessed using official records and independent evidence. The proposed Delhi protest has brought the issue of election administration into focus while prompting police to seek precautionary measures around metro stations and sensitive locations.

How Could the Proposed Closures Affect Delhi Metro Passengers?

If DMRC implements the requested restrictions, passengers could face changes to their usual travel plans. Closing entry and exit gates may prevent people from entering or leaving selected stations even if trains continue to pass through them. A reduction in train frequency, if introduced, could also result in longer waiting times or crowding at other stations. Interchange journeys may become more complicated if passengers cannot access their usual transfer points. People planning to travel on Friday night or Saturday should check the latest official service advisories before leaving home. They should also allow extra time for journeys and consider alternative routes if their destination is near Jantar Mantar or another area affected by security arrangements.

What Commuters Should Know Before Travelling

The key point for passengers is that Delhi Police has requested restrictions, but the request alone does not establish that all 57 stations will be shut. Travellers should look for confirmation from DMRC regarding the stations affected, the hours of operation and any changes to train frequency. Passengers heading to railway stations, hospitals, offices or educational institutions should allow additional travel time. Those who regularly use major interchange stations may wish to identify alternative routes in advance. Updates from official Delhi Metro channels and Delhi Police advisories will be the most reliable way to confirm the operational situation as the protest date approaches.
