Two Ascetics Killed, Bodies Burnt at Shahjahanpur Temple Over Land Dispute

Two elderly ascetics were allegedly killed inside a Shiva temple in Sutha village of Shahjahanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, with their bodies later set on fire on the temple premises. Police have detained a suspect in connection with the case and are questioning him as investigators work to establish the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the killings. The victims have been identified as 70-year-old Gopal Das and 60-year-old Bihari Das. Both had been staying at the temple and were involved in looking after the religious site. Police are investigating whether a dispute over control of the temple and adjoining land led to the alleged murders.

Bodies Found Burning Inside Shiva Temple

The incident came to light early Thursday morning after villagers noticed smoke rising from the temple area. According to reports, residents who reached the site found one of the bodies still burning, while the other had been badly burned. The condition of the bodies made the incident particularly difficult to investigate immediately. Police and forensic personnel reached the location after receiving information from local residents and began collecting evidence from the temple premises. The bodies were subsequently sent for postmortem examination as part of the investigation. The postmortem findings are expected to help investigators establish the cause of death and determine whether the victims were killed before the fire was started.

Who Were Gopal Das and Bihari Das?

Gopal Das had reportedly been living at the temple for nearly two decades. He had taken responsibility for looking after the temple after the death of his wife, according to information shared by his family. His brother, Ramdulare, said Gopal had recently returned home after travelling towards Gaya in Bihar. He had reportedly suffered an injury during the journey and returned before the incident. Bihari Das, who was around 60 years old, had become Gopal Das's disciple. He had reportedly started staying with him at the temple only about a month before the incident. The two men were therefore living together at the religious site when the alleged attack took place.

Land and Temple Control Dispute Under Investigation

A major focus of the investigation is an alleged dispute over the temple and land surrounding it. Police and local residents have indicated that the suspect allegedly wanted the two ascetics to leave the premises so that he could take control of the property and the temple's management. Reports indicate that land adjoining the temple was registered in Gopal Das's name. This aspect is now being examined by investigators as they try to determine whether the property dispute was connected to the killings. Residents also alleged that the suspect had previously been involved in confrontations with the two ascetics. These allegations are being examined by police and have not, by themselves, established criminal responsibility.

Suspect Sumit Singh Detained by Police

Police have detained a man identified as Sumit Singh for questioning. According to reporting based on police statements, Singh had returned from jail in August and had subsequently been spending time around the temple. Police are questioning him about his movements, his relationship with the two deceased men and the alleged dispute over the temple premises. A murder case has been registered, while investigators are examining physical evidence recovered from the scene. The police investigation will determine whether the allegations against the suspect are supported by forensic and other evidence.

What Happened Before the Alleged Killings?

According to local accounts cited in reports, tensions had developed between the ascetics and the suspect over his alleged attempts to stay at the temple and exercise control over the premises. Residents claimed that the two men had opposed his attempts to take control of the site. Some also alleged that there had been earlier incidents involving the suspect and the ascetics. These accounts are part of the preliminary information being examined by investigators. Police have not yet released a complete reconstruction of the incident, and the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths remain under investigation.

Forensic Investigation May Establish the Sequence of Events

The forensic examination of the temple premises is expected to be an important part of the case. Investigators will examine the location, the condition of the bodies and other available evidence to determine what happened before and after the fire. The postmortem examination is also expected to provide crucial information about the victims' deaths. Investigators will compare medical findings with evidence collected from the scene and statements recorded during the investigation. Police are also expected to examine the suspect's movements and previous interactions with the victims as part of the investigation.

Investigation Continues in Shahjahanpur

The killings have drawn attention because the victims were elderly ascetics living at a religious site and the alleged motive involves control of the temple and surrounding property. At present, police are continuing to question the detained suspect and examine evidence connected with the case. The allegations regarding the motive and the suspect's role will need to be established through the investigation and legal proceedings. The bodies of Gopal Das and Bihari Das have been sent for postmortem, while police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths and the subsequent burning of the bodies.
