President Droupadi Murmu Postpones Odisha Visit Amid Cyclone Threat

President Droupadi Murmu’s scheduled two-day visit to Odisha on October 28 and 29 has been postponed due to the possibility of a cyclonic storm developing near the state’s coastal region. Officials said the decision was taken after considering the latest weather forecast and necessary safety precautions. The President was scheduled to visit Rairangpur and Mayurbhanj, her home district, during the two-day programme. The visit was expected to include engagements in the region, but the developing weather situation has led authorities to revise the schedule. An official from the Chief Secretary’s office said the tour had been postponed because of unfavourable weather conditions and safety concerns. The Mayurbhanj district administration clarified that the programme had not been cancelled and would take place on revised dates. According to officials, President Murmu is now expected to visit Mayurbhanj on November 4 and 5, 2026.

Bay of Bengal Weather System Raises Cyclone Concerns

The postponement comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) monitors a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. According to the forecast issued on Saturday, the weather system was expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm. The system could move towards the eastern coast, with a possible landfall around the morning of October 28 somewhere between the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts. The actual path, intensity and timing may depend on how the system develops over the coming days. Odisha’s coastal areas are particularly important to monitor when a cyclone is forecast because strong winds, heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions can disrupt transport, public activities and daily life. However, the possible effects of this particular system will depend on the latest official forecast.

Why Was the President’s Visit Postponed?

Presidential visits require detailed planning, security arrangements and coordination among several government departments. When unfavourable weather is expected, authorities may adjust schedules to reduce risks and ensure that the programme can be conducted safely. In this case, officials cited the weather forecast and safety precautions as the reasons for postponing the October 28-29 visit. The revised dates will allow authorities to plan the programme around the anticipated weather conditions. The decision does not mean that the visit has been permanently cancelled. Officials have indicated that the Mayurbhanj programme is rescheduled for November 4-5.

What Should People in Odisha Know About the Cyclone Forecast?

Residents of coastal Odisha and nearby areas should keep track of official weather bulletins as the Bay of Bengal system develops. Cyclone forecasts can change as meteorologists receive updated information about the system’s movement and strength. People should follow instructions issued by district administrations, disaster management authorities and the IMD. They should avoid relying on unverified social media messages and check official updates before making travel or outdoor plans. Authorities may issue further advisories if the weather system intensifies or its expected path changes. The latest information on rainfall, wind speed and possible landfall should be taken from official bulletins rather than assumptions about the storm’s eventual impact.

What Happens to the Rescheduled Programme?

For now, President Murmu’s visit to Mayurbhanj is expected to take place on November 4 and 5. The programme remains subject to official arrangements and any further developments that may affect scheduling. The situation also highlights how weather forecasts can influence major public events, even when preparations are already underway. As the possible cyclone approaches the eastern coast, attention will remain on the IMD’s updates and the precautions taken by authorities in Odisha and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
