Bhagwant Mann Says CBI Returned Empty-Handed After Punjab Search

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has launched a sharp political attack on the BJP following a CBI search at the residence of his Officer on Special Duty, Rajbir Singh Ghuman, in Gharachon village of Sangrur. Mann alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation action was politically motivated and linked it to the approaching elections. He claimed that the search continued for nearly six hours but the investigating agency did not find anything and eventually left the premises without recovering anything significant. The episode has triggered a fresh political confrontation in Punjab, with the ruling Aam Aadmi Party questioning the timing of the investigation and opposition parties backing the agency's action and demanding that the investigation be allowed to proceed.

Bhagwant Mann Targets BJP Over CBI Action

Reacting to the search, Bhagwant Mann alleged that the CBI action was a signal that elections were approaching. Mann claimed that central agencies such as the CBI and Enforcement Directorate are used against political opponents or people close to them in states where elections are due. According to the chief minister, the latest search should be viewed in the context of a wider political strategy that, he alleged, has been used against opposition leaders in different states. Mann referred to cases involving political figures in Jharkhand and West Bengal and also pointed to action involving AAP leaders before the Delhi assembly elections. He alleged that Punjab was now facing a similar situation.

Six-Hour Search at Sangrur Village

The controversy began after a CBI team arrived at Gharachon village in Sangrur and searched the residence of Rajbir Singh Ghuman, an aide of the Punjab chief minister. The operation continued for several hours, drawing attention in the village and quickly becoming a political issue. Mann later claimed that the agency had remained at the premises for around six hours but did not find anything and returned empty-handed. The chief minister described the action as part of an alleged attempt to create a negative political narrative around his government. However, the claims made by Mann are political allegations, and the CBI's search itself should not be treated as proof of wrongdoing by any individual.

Search Turns Into a Political Confrontation

The CBI search soon became more than an investigative development as supporters and representatives of opposition political groups reached the village. Representatives of Waris Punjab De and Akali Dal Punar Surjeet were reportedly present during the search and publicly welcomed the CBI team. After the CBI vehicles left the area, an unusual scene unfolded. People were seen beating dhols, performing bhangra and showering flower petals as the agency vehicles departed. The public reaction added a dramatic dimension to an already politically charged situation and quickly became a talking point in Punjab.

Why Did Opposition Support the CBI Search?

The response from opposition groups was markedly different from that of the AAP government. While Mann questioned the motive and timing of the investigation, opposition representatives portrayed the CBI action as an opportunity to investigate allegations concerning financial losses and the alleged misuse of public resources. The contrasting reactions reflect the growing political divide over the investigation. For the AAP government, the search has raised questions about the role and timing of central agencies. For opposition parties, the focus is on allowing investigators to examine allegations and determine whether there has been any wrongdoing.

BJP Attacks AAP Government

BJP leader Tarun Chug also reacted strongly to the developments in Sangrur. Chug criticised the reaction of AAP supporters and attacked party chief Arvind Kejriwal over the political controversy. He argued that political statements should not distract from an investigation and said those responsible for any alleged loss of public money should be held accountable. The BJP leader also said that the investigation should be allowed to continue and that facts should ultimately determine the outcome. His remarks added another layer to the confrontation between the BJP and AAP in Punjab.

Mann Links Search to Elections

A major part of Mann's criticism focused on the timing of the investigation. The Punjab chief minister alleged that the use of central agencies against opposition leaders tends to increase around elections. He cited examples from other states to support his political argument and claimed that similar tactics had been used against AAP leaders in the past. Mann said the CBI action in Sangrur should therefore be seen against the backdrop of the political environment in Punjab. However, allegations about political motivation remain claims made by Mann. Any determination about the purpose or basis of the investigation would depend on the agency's findings and subsequent legal proceedings.

Mann Also Refers to BJP’s Anti-Drug Campaign

Mann further connected the search to the BJP's campaign against drugs in Punjab. He alleged that the BJP's anti-drug campaign had not produced the political impact the party expected and claimed that the latest investigation was another attempt to create pressure around his government. The allegation reflects the broader political contest between the AAP government and the BJP over law and order, drugs, governance and the performance of the state administration. The BJP, however, has rejected the political framing of such investigations and has maintained that allegations involving public money and governance should be properly investigated.

Why the Sangrur Search Matters

The incident is significant because the person whose residence was searched is linked to the Punjab chief minister. Any investigation involving a close aide of a sitting chief minister naturally attracts political attention, particularly when opposition parties are directly involved in the response. At the same time, a search by an investigating agency does not by itself establish guilt. The outcome will depend on what evidence investigators collect, whether any case is formally registered or pursued, and what conclusions emerge from the investigation. For now, the political debate has moved much faster than the legal process.

Unusual Scenes After CBI Team Leaves

The scenes following the departure of the CBI team became one of the most discussed aspects of the episode. Supporters and opposition representatives were seen celebrating the departure of the agency officials with traditional Punjabi music and bhangra. Dhol beats and flower petals were used to welcome the CBI vehicles as they left the area. Such scenes are unusual during an investigation and reflected the strong political emotions surrounding the operation. The incident also demonstrated how investigative actions involving politicians or their associates can quickly become public political events.

AAP Versus BJP: Another Political Flashpoint

The Sangrur incident has added another flashpoint to Punjab politics, where AAP and BJP have frequently clashed over governance and political strategy. Mann's criticism suggests that the AAP government views the latest action as part of a broader political confrontation. The BJP, meanwhile, has used the incident to question the AAP government's handling of allegations concerning public money and accountability. Both sides are therefore presenting the same event through sharply different political narratives. The eventual findings of the investigation will be important in determining whether the allegations raised around the case result in further legal action.
