Union Government Has No Objection to Sonam Wangchuk's Transfer to Medanta, Delhi HC Told

Union Government informed the Delhi High Court on Tuesday that it has no objection to shifting activist Sonam Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for further treatment. However, the government said the transfer should only take place after doctors determine that Wangchuk is medically fit for discharge.

The submission was made by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta during the hearing of an appeal filed by Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmo, who challenged an earlier order refusing permission to shift him to Medanta Hospital.

Government Says Doctors Should Decide

Appearing before the court, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the Union Government has no objection if Wangchuk receives treatment at Medanta Hospital. However, he stressed that the decision to discharge him must be based solely on medical advice and not on Wangchuk's personal request or the wishes of those accompanying him.

The government argued that any decision regarding the transfer should prioritize Wangchuk's health and safety and be taken by the treating doctors after a proper medical evaluation.

Concerns Raised Over Medical Care

During the hearing, the Solicitor General also expressed concern that some people around Wangchuk were trying to move him out of the hospital without giving sufficient importance to his medical condition.

He told the court that medical experts should be allowed to take independent decisions regarding Wangchuk's treatment and discharge without outside pressure.

Delhi High Court Reserves Its Decision

After hearing submissions from both sides, the Delhi High Court reserved its order on the plea. The court is expected to decide whether Wangchuk can be shifted to Medanta Hospital and the conditions under which the transfer may take place.

The hearing was also attended by one of Wangchuk's treating doctors, who provided the court with information regarding his medical condition and ongoing treatment.

Appeal Filed by Gitanjali Angmo

The appeal was filed by Gitanjali Angmo, wife of Sonam Wangchuk, before a Division Bench of the Delhi High Court.

She challenged an earlier decision by a single judge that declined to direct authorities to shift Wangchuk from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital. The Division Bench is now considering whether the transfer should be allowed while balancing medical advice and legal considerations.

Wangchuk Continues to Receive Medical Treatment

Sonam Wangchuk remains admitted to Safdarjung Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment after being hospitalised during his ongoing hunger strike linked to the NEET issue.

According to the latest medical bulletin, his vital parameters remain stable. However, doctors have advised that he continue to remain under close observation by a multidisciplinary medical team to prevent any complications.
