India-US Trade Talks May Have Reached Plateau, Says Sitharaman

India-US trade negotiations are continuing, but the two sides may have reached a point where further give-and-take has become increasingly difficult, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Monday. Speaking at the Munich Leaders Meeting in New Delhi, Sitharaman described the proposed India-US Trade Agreement as the result of hard and rigorous negotiations. The minister indicated that both countries could still examine whether there is enough flexibility to move the discussions forward. Her comments suggest that the negotiations remain active, but reaching additional compromises may be challenging at this stage.

Trade Balance Remains a Major Issue

Sitharaman also highlighted the current trade balance between India and the United States, saying it favours India. Washington has been seeking to reduce its trade deficit with India, making the issue an important part of the wider Trade Negotiations. The minister said the United States' position reflects concerns about what it considers accumulated losses in its trade relationship with India.

Why the Talks Matter

The India US Trade Deal is significant for businesses, exporters and industries in both countries because it involves discussions around market access, tariffs and broader trade conditions. The negotiations have been continuing under a framework announced in February 2026, with both countries working toward an interim agreement while also pursuing a broader bilateral trade arrangement.

India’s Wider Trade Strategy

Sitharaman also referred to India's trade agreement with the European Union while explaining the country's approach to negotiating market access. She pointed to the importance of balancing greater access to international markets with protecting India's competitiveness. Her remarks come as India continues to negotiate multiple trade agreements while seeking wider opportunities for its exporters.

Have India-US trade talks stopped?

No. Sitharaman said the negotiations are still ongoing, although both sides may have reached a plateau where additional concessions are difficult.
