Woman Enters Bengal Secretariat Posing as PMO Official, Probe Underway

A security-related incident has come to light at West Bengal's state secretariat, Nabanna, after a woman allegedly entered the government complex while presenting herself as an official from the Prime Minister's Office. The woman has been identified as Akanksha Vidyarthi. According to the latest information reported by NDTV's syndicated news service, she is being detained by Delhi Police while a team from Howrah City Police is questioning her. Investigators are trying to establish why she allegedly used the identity of a PMO official and what she intended to do inside the state secretariat. The incident occurred at Nabanna in Mandirtala, Howrah, where the State Public Works Department has its offices. The woman had reportedly obtained an appointment before visiting the department on Wednesday.

Woman Had Taken Prior Appointment

According to the police account reported by NDTV, Vidyarthi did not simply arrive at the secretariat without prior contact. She had reportedly sought an appointment with officials of the State Public Works Department before reaching Nabanna. During her visit, she allegedly presented herself as a PMO official and asked PWD officials questions about the functioning of the department. The nature of the questions has become an important part of the investigation because officers are now trying to determine whether the visit was simply an attempt to gain access using a false identity or whether there was another purpose behind it. Police have not yet publicly established the exact motive.

PWD Officials Became Suspicious

The situation changed when some PWD officials reportedly began questioning the woman's identity. According to a state police official cited in the NDTV report, officials became suspicious of her claims. Once she realised that her identity was being questioned, she allegedly left the Nabanna premises quickly. The PWD subsequently verified the information she had provided and concluded that the identity she had allegedly used was false. Following this, the department submitted a written complaint to Howrah City Police. By the time police began following up on the complaint, the woman had already returned to Delhi.

Howrah Police Team Travels to Delhi

The investigation moved from West Bengal to the national capital after police received information about the woman's location in Delhi. Howrah City Police contacted Delhi Police after learning that Vidyarthi was in the city. A team of investigators then travelled to Delhi to question her. The latest report says she is currently under detention by Delhi Police while Howrah investigators are interrogating her. The investigation is expected to focus on the circumstances in which she obtained the appointment, the information she provided before entering Nabanna and the identity she allegedly used while dealing with officials.

Investigation Focuses on Exact Motive

The most important question for investigators is why the woman allegedly entered a sensitive government complex while claiming to be connected with the PMO. Police are attempting to establish whether she wanted to obtain information about the PWD, whether the visit was linked to any other objective or whether there was another reason for using the alleged false identity. At present, the exact motive has not been established publicly. Police are continuing their questioning and verification process. This distinction is important because the allegations concerning her motive remain part of an ongoing investigation and have not been established as proven facts.

Police Check Possible Organised Gang Angle

Investigators are also examining whether Vidyarthi may have been acting alone. A state police official told NDTV that Howrah City Police are trying to determine whether she was connected to an organised group. The police are therefore examining her background and possible contacts as part of the investigation. However, there is currently no publicly established evidence in the available report proving that an organised gang was involved. The possibility is being examined by investigators. This aspect could become significant if police find evidence of other people helping her obtain access, arrange the appointment or prepare the alleged credentials.

Why Nabanna Visit Has Drawn Attention

Nabanna is the administrative headquarters of the West Bengal government and houses important government offices. The alleged use of a false official identity to enter the premises has therefore raised questions about the verification process followed before appointments with government departments. The investigation will need to establish how the appointment was approved, what identification or information was presented before the visit and how the woman was able to interact with officials after entering the premises. These questions are particularly relevant because the woman had reportedly made prior contact with the department rather than appearing without any appointment.

What Happened After She Left Nabanna?

After officials became suspicious and the woman left the premises, the PWD submitted a written complaint to Howrah City Police. Police then began tracing her movements and location. Investigators eventually learned that she had travelled back to Delhi. A special team was subsequently sent to the national capital to question her. The latest report says Delhi Police is currently holding her while Howrah City Police investigators are conducting questioning. The investigation is now expected to establish a timeline of her movements before and after the Nabanna visit.

Several questions remain central to the case.

Police are trying to determine how the woman obtained the appointment at Nabanna, what information she gave officials about her alleged government position and why she wanted access to the PWD. Investigators are also examining whether she had contacted any other government offices or officials using a similar identity. Another question is whether anyone assisted her. Police have specifically said they are examining the possibility of an organised group, although this has not been established at this stage.

Who Is Akanksha Vidyarthi?

Akanksha Vidyarthi is the woman identified by police sources in connection with the Nabanna incident. She allegedly visited the State Public Works Department after obtaining a prior appointment and presented herself as an official from the PMO. Her alleged identity came under suspicion during her interaction with PWD officials, after which she left the premises. Howrah City Police later traced her to Delhi.

Why Is Howrah Police Questioning Her?

Howrah Police are questioning her to determine the circumstances behind her alleged use of a false PMO identity and her purpose in visiting the state secretariat. Investigators are also examining whether she acted independently or had links with other people. The exact motive remains under investigation.
