Sonam Wangchuk Shifted to Safdarjung Hospital as Delhi Police Clear Jantar Mantar Protest

Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi early Saturday after his health deteriorated on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike. Delhi Police said the decision was taken in compliance with the Delhi High Court's directions and based on expert medical advice.

According to hospital sources, Wangchuk is conscious and his vital signs remain stable. Medical teams had been monitoring his health twice a day following earlier instructions from the Health Ministry and the Delhi High Court.

Delhi Police Cites High Court Order

In a statement posted on X, Delhi Police said Wangchuk was moved to the hospital because of his declining health condition.

The police stated that while carrying out the High Court's directions, some protesters attempted to obstruct the process, leading to a brief commotion. However, officials said the operation was completed peacefully and with maximum restraint.

Police also appealed to protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to vacate the protest site peacefully.

Why Were Protesters Removed from Jantar Mantar?

The removal of protesters comes ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is scheduled to begin on July 20. According to officials, the Delhi High Court directed authorities to ensure law and order in the area before Parliament convenes.

Following a late-night meeting led by Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar with senior officers, authorities carried out the operation in the early hours of Saturday. Police also warned of possible large-scale demonstrations during the Parliament session, prompting the clearance of the protest site.

Protesters Allege Sudden Police Action

Some protesters claimed that plainclothes police officers entered the protest site early in the morning, initially presenting themselves as members of a medical team.

According to one protester, volunteers requested officials to wait before moving Wangchuk, but police informed them that they were acting under a High Court order. Protesters also alleged that activist Abhijit was detained during the operation, although there was no immediate official confirmation.

Why Is Sonam Wangchuk on Hunger Strike?

Sonam Wangchuk began his indefinite fast on June 28, joining a campaign led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). His primary demand is the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET-UG examination paper leak.

Supporters say the protest seeks greater accountability in the education system and action over examination irregularities. Wangchuk has continued the hunger strike despite concerns over his deteriorating health.
