Two Law Students Arrested After Supreme Court Courtroom Disruption, Sent to Police Custody

Delhi Police have arrested two law students from Lucknow University in connection with the disruption that took place inside the Supreme Court of India on July 10, 2026. The accused have been remanded to two days of police custody as investigators continue to probe the incident.

The main accused has been identified as Prabal Pratap Singh (24), a third-year law student, while the second accused is Chander Bhan (23), a second-year law student at Lucknow University.

An FIR has been registered at Tilak Marg Police Station under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 132, 221, 224 and 3(5), along with other applicable legal provisions.

Alleged Disruption During Supreme Court Hearing

According to the investigation, the incident occurred in Courtroom No. 13 during the hearing of an appeal filed by Prabal Pratap Singh, who appeared before the court as a petitioner-in-person.

Police alleged that during the proceedings, the accused used abusive and objectionable language inside the courtroom. He also allegedly threw case papers towards the Bench, disrupting the hearing.

When security personnel intervened to control the situation, the accused allegedly resisted and used force against an on-duty security staff member before being restrained.

Incident Triggered During Hearing

The matter before the Supreme Court related to a challenge against an Allahabad High Court order concerning an application under Section 173(4) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

During the hearing before Justice K. V. Viswanathan and Justice Alok Aradhe, the petitioner reportedly made an unusual submission directing the Bench to order the registration of an FIR against an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Lucknow.

The judges expressed surprise at the remark, following which the petitioner allegedly became aggressive, threw documents in the courtroom and used objectionable language, prompting immediate intervention by court security personnel.

Medical Examination Conducted

Following directions arising from the Supreme Court proceedings, both accused underwent medical examinations at the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS).

According to the medical report, neither individual required immediate psychiatric treatment.

During the investigation, police also recovered pamphlets containing allegedly objectionable content from the accused. These materials are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

Police Continue Investigation

Delhi Police are questioning both accused during their police custody to determine the motive behind the courtroom disruption and whether anyone else was involved.

Officials said the investigation remains ongoing, and further legal action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.

The incident has drawn attention because of the importance of maintaining decorum and security within the country's highest judicial institution.
