Two individuals have been detained in Guwahati for allegedly painting murals of activist Sonam Wangchuk on public walls, prompting police to register separate cases over the alleged defacement of government property.

According to Guwahati Police, the two youths were intercepted by a patrolling team near Jyoti Bishnu Auditorium in the Khanapara area while allegedly painting on a public wall during the night.

Police Register Two Separate Cases

The detained individuals have been identified as Nakul Mili, a resident of Dibrugarh, and Gaurav Singha of Guwahati.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Intelligence) Hiranya Barman said a case has been registered at Dispur Police Station in connection with the incident. Another case has also been filed at Basistha Police Station after similar murals were found painted on public property in another area.

Police Say Public Property Was Defaced

According to police, the two youths admitted they were attempting to paint a mural of Sonam Wangchuk.

Officials said vandalising flyovers, walls and other public infrastructure has become a recurring issue and warned that strict action would be taken against those responsible for damaging government property.

Police have launched an investigation to identify others who may have been involved in painting similar murals.

Sonam Wangchuk Shifted to Hospital

The Guwahati incident comes as Sonam Wangchuk was shifted from the Jantar Mantar protest site in New Delhi to Safdarjung Hospital after his health deteriorated during a prolonged hunger strike.

Hospital authorities said Wangchuk was suffering from mild dehydration and weakness, but his vital signs remained stable. Doctors confirmed he is under continuous medical observation.

Protest Continues Over Education Issues

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged irregularities in national examinations, including the NEET paper leak controversy.

His transfer to the hospital has triggered criticism from several opposition parties, while supporters have vowed to continue the protest.
