Supreme Court Questions Andhra Police Over Sai Krishna Custodial Death Case

The Supreme Court has stepped in to directly monitor the investigation into the alleged Sai Krishna custodial death case in Andhra Pradesh, raising serious questions over how the matter was handled after Gade Sai Krishna disappeared while in police custody. A three-judge Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath, Justice Augustine George Masih and Justice Sandeep Mehta stayed proceedings connected with the matter before the Andhra Pradesh High Court. The court also directed that relevant records and case details be submitted in a sealed cover by September 30. The next hearing has been scheduled for October 12. The Supreme Court's intervention came after a petition by YSRCP MP Maddila Gurumoorthy, who sought an investigation into the alleged role of senior police officials in Sai Krishna's detention, disappearance and alleged death in custody.

Why Did Police Delay The FIR?

One of the central issues before the Supreme Court is the delay in registering an FIR. According to the proceedings reported by multiple outlets, the Bench questioned why a case was not registered immediately despite a complaint regarding Sai Krishna's disappearance being submitted to the Director General of Police on May 28. The formal case was subsequently registered on June 19 following a complaint by Sai Krishna's mother. The delay has become particularly important because the investigation concerns allegations that Sai Krishna disappeared after being taken into police custody. The court also questioned the circumstances surrounding the initial handling of the complaint and whether sufficient steps were taken at the earliest stage to establish what happened to him.

Sai Krishna Was Taken Into Police Custody

Gade Sai Krishna, a young man from Andhra Pradesh, was taken into custody by Task Force personnel while authorities were executing non-bailable warrants against him. According to the material placed before courts, he was brought to the Krishnalanka Police Station in Vijayawada on May 6. The Supreme Court was told that he was allegedly never produced before a magistrate after being taken into custody. This point became another major concern for the Bench. The Supreme Court specifically questioned why Sai Krishna had not been produced before a magistrate and sought clarification about the circumstances surrounding his detention. The court's concern is particularly significant because judicial oversight is an important safeguard when a person is taken into police custody.

What Happened Inside And After Police Custody?

The case initially emerged as a disappearance matter. Sai Krishna's family sought information about his whereabouts after he could no longer be traced. The subsequent investigation by the Andhra Pradesh Special Investigation Team changed the direction of the case. The SIT's chargesheet, filed in September, alleges that Sai Krishna died following an assault by police personnel. The investigation examined his arrest, his alleged treatment in custody, his disappearance and the events that followed his death. The chargesheet reportedly names seven accused. Earlier SIT findings reported by several news organisations alleged that Sai Krishna was assaulted while in police custody and was later taken to another location.

Missing CCTV Footage Becomes Another Major Issue

The Supreme Court also expressed concern over the alleged deletion of CCTV footage from the police station. Surveillance footage could potentially be important in reconstructing the movements of a person who was allegedly taken into custody and later disappeared. The Bench therefore sought clarity on what happened to the CCTV recordings and why relevant footage was allegedly unavailable. The issue of missing or deleted footage has become one of the most closely watched aspects of the Andhra Pradesh police investigation, particularly because the case involves allegations concerning events inside or connected to police custody. Earlier proceedings had also referred to difficulties in recovering CCTV-related material.

Court Questions Role Of Senior Police Officers

Another important aspect of the Supreme Court's intervention is its focus on senior police officials. The Bench questioned whether the investigation had concentrated primarily on lower-ranking personnel while important questions concerning senior officers remained unanswered. The petition before the court seeks examination of the alleged role of senior officials in the detention, disappearance and alleged death of Sai Krishna. The Andhra Pradesh High Court had earlier dealt with proceedings concerning allegations involving senior officers, including the state DGP and senior police officials. The Supreme Court has now stayed related proceedings and decided to directly monitor the matter.

SIT Has Already Filed Chargesheet

The Supreme Court's intervention comes shortly after the Andhra Pradesh SIT filed its chargesheet in the case. According to the chargesheet reported by The Times of India, investigators relied on technical evidence, forensic material and witness statements while outlining the alleged sequence of events. Seven people have been named as accused in connection with the case. The chargesheet represents the state investigation's current findings, but the Supreme Court has indicated that the filing of a chargesheet and arrests do not necessarily resolve all the questions surrounding the case. The Bench specifically noted that issues relating to the conduct of senior officials and the actions of the personnel involved in executing the warrants still required examination.

Why The Supreme Court's Intervention Matters

The case has attracted attention because it involves several separate questions that need to be examined together: the circumstances of Sai Krishna's detention, his non-production before a magistrate, the delay in registering the FIR, the alleged disappearance of his body and questions surrounding CCTV evidence. The Supreme Court has therefore sought a broader picture rather than limiting the proceedings to the arrests already made. By staying related proceedings in the Andhra Pradesh High Court and asking for records in a sealed cover, the Supreme Court has created a direct judicial monitoring mechanism for the case at this stage.

Political Reaction To The Case

The case has also become part of a wider political confrontation in Andhra Pradesh. YSRCP leaders, including former Chief Minister and party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, have demanded accountability over the alleged custodial death and sought a CBI investigation. The political debate has continued alongside the legal proceedings, with the opposition questioning the state government's handling of the matter. However, the Supreme Court proceedings are focused on the legal and investigative questions surrounding Sai Krishna's detention, disappearance, alleged death and the preservation of evidence. It is important to distinguish political allegations from findings that have been established by a court.

What Happens Next?

The Andhra Pradesh government and other respondents have been directed to provide relevant records and details in a sealed cover by September 30. The Supreme Court is expected to examine the material at the next hearing on October 12. Among the key issues likely to remain under scrutiny are the delay in registering the FIR, the failure to produce Sai Krishna before a magistrate, the alleged deletion or non-availability of CCTV footage, the disappearance of the body and the possible role of senior police officers. The SIT chargesheet will also form an important part of the record as the Supreme Court considers whether the existing investigation has adequately addressed all aspects of the case.

What is the Sai Krishna custodial death case?

The case concerns the alleged death of Gade Sai Krishna after he was taken into police custody in Andhra Pradesh. The Supreme Court has questioned the delayed FIR, his alleged non-production before a magistrate and the reported disappearance of CCTV footage.

Why did the Supreme Court intervene?

The Supreme Court intervened after a petition seeking examination of the alleged role of senior police officials. The Bench stayed related Andhra Pradesh High Court proceedings and decided to directly monitor the matter.

What did the SIT investigation find?

The SIT chargesheet alleges that Sai Krishna died following an assault by police personnel and details the subsequent events surrounding his disappearance and death. Seven people have been named as accused, according to reports on the chargesheet.

When will the Supreme Court hear the case again?

The Supreme Court has directed that relevant records be submitted in a sealed cover by September 30. The matter is scheduled to be heard again on October 12.
