BJP Reports Rs 529 Crore Election Spending Across Five States

The Bharatiya Janata Party reported election expenditure of around Rs 529.39 crore across five states and one Union Territory during the 2026 Assembly election cycle, according to an analysis of expenditure filings submitted to the Election Commission. The figures cover the elections in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Among these contests, West Bengal accounted for the largest share of the BJP's reported expenditure, with nearly Rs 287 crore spent during the election period. The data provides an insight into how the BJP's reported spending was distributed across the five electoral contests and how its expenditure compared with figures submitted by other major political parties.

West Bengal Accounts for More Than Half of BJP Spending

West Bengal emerged as the largest component of the BJP's reported election expenditure. According to the filings analysed by NDTV, the party reported spending Rs 286.99 crore in the state. That represents more than half of its combined reported expenditure across the five contests. The Indian Express reported that the BJP's West Bengal expenditure included Rs 217.16 crore for general party campaign activities and Rs 69.83 crore under expenditure associated with candidates. Of the candidate-related amount, Rs 58.80 crore was provided directly to candidates. The spending figures come from the party's submitted expenditure reports and therefore represent amounts reported by the party rather than an independent estimate of all campaign activity.

Assam Was the Second-Largest Spending State

Assam recorded the second-highest BJP expenditure among the five contests covered by the analysis. The party reported spending Rs 96.27 crore in Assam, while Congress reported Rs 30 crore in the filing comparison. The difference between the reported figures was Rs 66.27 crore. The BJP's Assam expenditure was considerably lower than its West Bengal figure but remained a substantial part of its overall reported spending. The Assam election was one of the five major Assembly contests held during the 2026 election cycle, making the state's expenditure part of the wider picture of how political parties allocated resources across different electoral markets.

BJP Reported Rs 82.67 Crore in Kerala

Kerala was another major component of the BJP's reported expenditure. The party reported spending Rs 82.67 crore in the state. Congress, in the comparison cited by NDTV, reported Rs 27.67 crore. The difference between the two reported figures was approximately Rs 55 crore. The Kerala figures are notable because the BJP's reported expenditure there was substantially higher than its expenditure in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, although it remained well below the amount reported for West Bengal. The expenditure reports offer a state-by-state view of party spending, but they should not by themselves be treated as a direct measurement of campaign intensity or political support.

Tamil Nadu Shows a Different Spending Pattern

Tamil Nadu stands out from the other states in the expenditure comparison. The BJP reported Rs 51.56 crore in expenditure in Tamil Nadu. The DMK filing analysed in the report showed Rs 193.70 crore attributable to Tamil Nadu. This means the spending pattern in Tamil Nadu differed considerably from West Bengal, Assam and Kerala, where the BJP's reported expenditure was higher than the corresponding Congress figures cited in the analysis. The figures also demonstrate why election expenditure comparisons need to account for the structure of individual party filings. A party's reported expenditure may include different types of campaign-related payments, transfers or organisational expenses depending on how its accounts are prepared.

Puducherry Recorded the Lowest BJP Expenditure

Puducherry recorded the smallest BJP expenditure among the five contests covered by the analysis. The BJP reported Rs 11.90 crore in spending, while the DMK reported Rs 1.95 crore in the comparison. The difference was Rs 9.95 crore. Because Puducherry is a Union Territory with a smaller electorate and fewer Assembly constituencies than the other states in the comparison, its reported expenditure is much lower in absolute terms. Even so, the Puducherry filing forms part of the combined Rs 529.39 crore figure attributed to the BJP across the five election contests.

BJP's Combined Reported Spending

Adding the figures from the individual filings gives the BJP a combined reported expenditure of approximately Rs 529.39 crore across the five contests.

The state-wise distribution was:

  • West Bengal: Rs 286.99 crore

  • Assam: Rs 96.27 crore

  • Kerala: Rs 82.67 crore

  • Tamil Nadu: Rs 51.56 crore

  • Puducherry: Rs 11.90 crore

The numbers show that West Bengal alone represented more than half of the BJP's combined reported spending across these contests.

How Other Parties' Reported Figures Compare

The expenditure analysis also included figures reported by several other parties. Across the supplied filings, the reported expenditure totals were approximately Rs 197.85 crore for the DMK, Rs 112.40 crore for the AIADMK, Rs 95.52 crore for Congress and Rs 39.04 crore for CPI(M). However, these figures should not be interpreted as a perfectly uniform comparison. The filings cover different states and categories, and parties may account for spending differently. For example, the Congress document cited in the analysis includes lump-sum assistance provided to candidates, while the AIADMK filing combines figures covering Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.

What Election Expenditure Filings Reveal

Political parties are required to submit details of their election expenditure after polls. These accounts can include spending on campaign activities, travel, rallies, advertising, campaign materials and other election-related requirements. The BJP's latest filings therefore provide a financial snapshot of its reported spending during the 2026 Assembly election cycle. The data also shows how expenditure can vary considerably from one state to another. West Bengal accounted for the largest amount in the BJP's filings, followed by Assam and Kerala, while Tamil Nadu and Puducherry recorded lower figures. The differences reflect the separate accounting statements submitted for each electoral contest.

Party Spending and Candidate Spending Are Different

Another important point in the expenditure data is the distinction between spending by political parties and spending limits applicable to individual candidates. Candidates are subject to statutory expenditure limits when contesting elections. Political parties, however, do not face the same overall ceiling on their election expenditure. Party expenditure reports can therefore include large-scale organisational and campaign expenses that are separate from the spending recorded in an individual candidate's account. The BJP's West Bengal filing illustrates this distinction, with separate figures reported for general party campaigning and candidate-related expenditure.

BJP's Financial Position After the Election Cycle

The expenditure filings also provide information about the BJP's financial position at the end of the election cycle. The Indian Express reported that the party's closing balance stood at Rs 7,689.06 crore in bank balance and cash in hand after the election period. The party received approximately Rs 1,494 crore during the election period, according to the report. These figures are separate from the Rs 529.38 crore spent across the five election contests. The reported balance therefore provides additional financial context to the party's election expenditure, although it should not be confused with the amount available specifically for future campaign spending.

Why West Bengal Dominated the Expenditure Figures

West Bengal's share of the BJP's reported expenditure is particularly significant because the state alone accounted for more than half of the party's combined spending across the five contests. The BJP reported Rs 286.99 crore in the state, compared with much smaller reported figures in the other four contests. The Indian Express reported that Rs 217.16 crore of the West Bengal amount was classified as general party campaign expenditure, while Rs 69.83 crore was associated with candidates.

Reading Election Spending Data Carefully

Election expenditure figures can attract significant attention because they offer a measurable way of examining campaign finances. However, expenditure data does not provide a complete picture of an election. Campaign spending is only one part of an electoral contest. Party organisation, candidates, local campaigning, voter participation, political alliances and other factors are not captured by a simple expenditure figure. There is also an accounting issue: different parties can submit statements using different categories and structures. For this reason, the reported figures are best understood as financial disclosures made to the Election Commission rather than as a complete measure of every campaign-related activity.

What the Five-State Data Shows

The 2026 Assembly election expenditure filings show substantial variation in the BJP's reported spending across the five contests. West Bengal accounted for nearly Rs 287 crore, making it the largest single component of the BJP's reported expenditure. Assam followed with more than Rs 96 crore, while Kerala accounted for more than Rs 82 crore. Tamil Nadu stood at around Rs 51.56 crore, while Puducherry accounted for around Rs 11.90 crore.

Together, the figures add up to approximately Rs 529.39 crore.

The filings also show that expenditure patterns differed between political parties and between states. Because the accounting categories are not identical across all documents, the figures require context before direct comparisons are made.

How Much Did BJP Spend in the 2026 Assembly Elections?

According to the analysed expenditure filings, the BJP reported approximately Rs 529.39 crore in expenditure across Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal during the 2026 Assembly election cycle. West Bengal accounted for nearly Rs 287 crore, the largest share of the total.

Which State Saw the Highest BJP Election Expenditure?

West Bengal recorded the highest BJP-reported election expenditure among the five contests, at Rs 286.99 crore. The figure represented more than half of the party's combined reported expenditure across the five states and Union Territory.
