Indian Pilot Smit Machchhar Praised After Flydubai Flight FZ1073 Incident

Indian commercial pilot Captain Smit Machchhar has received international attention after a serious security incident unfolded aboard a Flydubai passenger aircraft travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv. The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, when a confrontation developed inside the cockpit of flight FZ1073, resulting in injuries to members of the flight crew and forcing the aircraft to divert to Saudi Arabia. According to accounts provided by Israeli officials and reported by Reuters, Machchhar was attacked by the co-pilot during the flight and suffered serious injuries. The aircraft subsequently went through a rapid descent before passengers and crew members were able to enter the cockpit and restrain the other pilot. The aircraft eventually landed safely at Tabuk in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Machchhar was taken to hospital for treatment and was later reported to be in stable condition.

What Happened on Flydubai FZ1073?

The Flydubai FZ1073 flight was operating from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion Airport when the incident began inside the flight deck. Israeli officials said the co-pilot attacked Machchhar and that the aircraft then entered a steep descent. Reuters reported that the aircraft lost almost 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds, creating a critical situation for everyone on board. The exact sequence of events is still being investigated. Flydubai described the episode as an altercation on board, while the UAE aviation regulator classified it as a security incident and confirmed that the situation was brought under control. Authorities have also cautioned against drawing premature conclusions about the motive behind the confrontation.

Injured Captain Managed to Open Cockpit Door

One of the most significant developments in the incident came after Machchhar was reportedly injured inside the cockpit. According to accounts cited by Israeli officials, the captain was on the cockpit floor and covered in blood when he managed to activate the mechanism that opened the cockpit door. This allowed passengers and crew members to enter the flight deck. They helped restrain the co-pilot and prevented the confrontation from continuing unchecked. The intervention was followed by another crucial development. Two additional Flydubai pilots were travelling on the aircraft as passengers. They entered the cockpit and helped operate the aircraft after the emergency developed.

Emergency Landing at Tabuk Airport

Following the cockpit emergency, the aircraft was diverted to Saudi Arabia. The Boeing 737 eventually landed safely at Tabuk Airport, in northwestern Saudi Arabia. Both pilots were reported to have required medical treatment after the incident. Machchhar was transported to a hospital in Tabuk, where he continued receiving treatment. The Indian Embassy in Riyadh later said that his condition was stable and that Indian diplomatic officials were closely following developments. The passengers were subsequently able to continue their journey to Israel on another aircraft. The safe landing brought an end to the immediate emergency, although investigators continued examining what had happened inside the cockpit.

Passengers and Crew Helped Control the Situation

The actions of passengers and crew members became another major part of the unfolding story. Once the cockpit door was opened, people travelling in the aircraft entered the flight deck and helped overpower the co-pilot. Their intervention allowed the situation to be brought under control while other pilots on board assisted with flying the aircraft. Reports described the incident as an extraordinary sequence in which the injured captain, passengers, cabin crew and off-duty pilots all played roles in preventing the emergency from escalating further. The incident also highlighted the importance of having experienced aviation personnel among passengers during an unexpected emergency. The two Flydubai pilots travelling as passengers were able to assist once access to the cockpit was restored.

PM Modi Praises Captain Smit Machchhar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly praised Smit Machchhar after the incident. Modi described the Indian pilot as a hero and highlighted his actions despite being seriously injured. He also spoke with Machchhar's wife and parents and said that Indian missions were providing assistance to the injured pilot. According to government sources, the Prime Minister told the family that Indian officials were coordinating with Saudi authorities while Machchhar remained under medical care. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also praised Machchhar's actions following the emergency. Reuters reported that both Indian and Israeli leaders publicly recognised the captain's role during the incident.

Who Is Smit Machchhar?

Captain Machchhar is an experienced Indian commercial aviator who has worked with Flydubai since 2022. Before joining the Dubai-based airline, he spent more than a decade with Indian carrier SpiceJet. Reuters reported that he had accumulated nearly 9,750 flying hours over a career spanning roughly 15 years. Machchhar had trained in New Zealand and later worked his way through the aviation industry, eventually becoming a line training captain at SpiceJet. He joined Flydubai in 2022 and became a Boeing 737 commander. Reuters also reported that aviation was not originally his childhood career ambition. After school, he studied textile engineering with the intention of becoming involved in his family's textile business. His interest in aviation developed later after he attended an aviation seminar when he was around 19.

Captain's Experience Became Important During Emergency

Machchhar's extensive experience operating Boeing 737 aircraft has attracted attention following the emergency. The aircraft involved in the incident was a Boeing 737 MAX 8. When the cockpit confrontation disrupted normal flight operations, the presence of experienced pilots among the passengers became particularly important. The injured captain was reportedly able to open the cockpit door despite his condition. This allowed other people on board to intervene and ultimately helped create an opportunity for the additional pilots to assist with the aircraft's operation. The aircraft's safe landing at Tabuk was followed by medical treatment for the injured crew members and arrangements for passengers to continue their journey.

Machchhar's Condition Remains Under Observation

The Indian Embassy in Riyadh said that it and the Consulate General of India in Jeddah were monitoring Machchhar's condition. The captain was taken to a hospital in Tabuk following the emergency landing. Reports published on October 1 said he was in stable condition. Indian diplomatic officials were also in contact with his family as he continued to receive treatment in Saudi Arabia. The condition of the other pilot involved in the confrontation was not immediately clear from all official accounts, while Saudi authorities continued handling the investigation.

Investigation Into Flydubai Cockpit Incident

The Flydubai cockpit incident remains under investigation. Israeli officials have alleged that the co-pilot stabbed Machchhar and attempted to take control of the aircraft with the intention of causing it to crash. However, authorities have not publicly established a final motive for the confrontation. Reuters reported that Israeli officials identified the co-pilot as an Omani national, while Saudi authorities were involved in questioning him. The UAE government had not issued a detailed public account of the alleged motive at the time of reporting. Flydubai has urged caution over speculation while investigators examine the circumstances. This distinction is important because some of the most serious claims surrounding the incident remain allegations reported by officials while the investigation is continuing.

Why the Aircraft Was Diverted to Saudi Arabia

The original route was a Dubai to Tel Aviv flight, but the aircraft could no longer continue normally after the cockpit emergency. With the situation inside the flight deck brought under control, the aircraft was diverted to Saudi Arabia and landed in Tabuk. Saudi Arabia's Tabuk airport subsequently became the location where the injured pilots received medical attention. The diversion also provided the aircraft with a safe destination while the emergency situation was managed. The passengers later continued their journey to Israel using a replacement aircraft.

Passengers Reach Safety After Emergency

The 174 people on board eventually reached safety. Passengers and crew members who entered the cockpit helped restrain the co-pilot, while two additional Flydubai pilots assisted with the aircraft's operation. After landing in Saudi Arabia, arrangements were made for passengers to continue towards Israel. Reuters reported that the passengers eventually arrived at Ben Gurion Airport aboard a replacement aircraft. The incident has attracted international attention because of the combination of an alleged cockpit attack, a rapid loss of altitude, the captain's injuries, passenger intervention and the emergency diversion to Saudi Arabia.

International Attention on Indian Pilot

The incident has placed Indian pilot Smit Machchhar at the centre of international attention. Indian and Israeli leaders publicly praised his actions, while Indian diplomatic officials worked with Saudi authorities and his family regarding his medical treatment. The Guardian reported that Machchhar's ability to open the cockpit door after being injured allowed passengers and other pilots to enter the flight deck and intervene. Reuters separately reported that Machchhar had nearly 9,750 hours of flying experience and had worked with SpiceJet for around 11 years before moving to Flydubai.

What Happens Next?

The investigation will focus on establishing the complete sequence of events inside the cockpit, the circumstances surrounding the attack, the reason for the aircraft's rapid descent and the motive of the co-pilot. Authorities will also have to examine how the aircraft's flight systems responded during the descent and how control was restored before the emergency landing. For now, officials have confirmed that the aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia and that Machchhar is receiving medical treatment. The case remains active, and further findings from Saudi, UAE and Israeli authorities could provide additional information about the incident.
