India's ambitious high-speed rail programme is moving closer to an important milestone, with testing of the country's first domestically developed high-speed train expected to begin in May or June 2027. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the trial phase will mark a major step towards bringing the much-awaited service into operation. The trials will be conducted on a section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor where construction work is approaching completion. Authorities plan to conduct detailed testing before opening the service for passengers. According to the timeline shared by the minister, commercial operations could begin around two to four months after the testing process is completed.

Bullet Train Trials Expected From May or June 2027

The Bullet Train India project has been under development for several years and is being built to introduce a new level of speed and modern rail technology to the country's transport network. Vaishnaw said the first body frame of India's high-speed train has been completed and has entered structural testing. The process, known as squeeze testing, is intended to examine the strength and durability of the train's structure before it progresses to further stages. Once the train reaches the tracks, engineers will conduct multiple tests to assess its performance, safety systems and compatibility with the newly constructed infrastructure. The trial period will be important because the train and the railway corridor must be evaluated under different operating conditions before passengers are allowed to travel.

Mumbai to Ahmedabad Travel Time to Fall Sharply

One of the biggest attractions of the project is the expected reduction in travel time between major cities. The Mumbai Ahmedabad High Speed Rail corridor is designed to provide significantly faster connectivity between Maharashtra and Gujarat. Vaishnaw said passengers travelling from Vadodara to Mumbai could complete the journey in approximately 90 minutes once the system becomes operational. The full Mumbai-Ahmedabad journey is expected to be much faster than conventional rail travel. The project is therefore being viewed as a major transformation in intercity transportation, particularly for business travellers, professionals and passengers travelling frequently between the two states.

Service to Open in Different Stages

The complete corridor is not expected to become operational in a single phase. Instead, services will be introduced progressively as individual sections are completed, tested and approved. The first planned operational stretch is the Surat-Bilimora section. After that, additional portions are expected to be brought into service in stages.

The planned sequence includes:

• Surat-Bilimora as the first section to become operational.

• Vapi-Surat as the second phase.

• Vapi-Ahmedabad as the third phase.

• Ahmedabad-Thane as another major stage.

• The final Mumbai connection will follow once the required Thane section is ready.

This phased approach is expected to allow authorities to begin passenger operations on completed portions instead of waiting for the entire corridor to be finished.

Surat-Vapi Section Nears Completion

Construction activity on the corridor has gained momentum, with the Surat-Vapi portion expected to reach an important completion stage by December 2026, according to the minister. Completing individual sections will allow testing and certification work to proceed gradually. Once the infrastructure is ready, trains can undergo technical trials before passenger services are introduced. The construction involves more than simply laying railway tracks. High-speed rail requires specially designed infrastructure capable of supporting trains travelling at significantly higher speeds than conventional services. Bridges, tunnels, stations, signalling systems, electrical equipment and safety arrangements all need to meet the required standards.

India's Indigenous High-Speed Train

Another important aspect of the project is the development of India's own high-speed train technology. The development of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor faced delays during the Covid-19 pandemic, which affected construction and infrastructure projects across the country. However, work gained momentum after the disruption, allowing several sections of the project to move towards completion. The government now expects construction and testing to progress more rapidly as major portions of the corridor become ready. The introduction of high-speed rail is expected to represent a major change in India's railway infrastructure, particularly because it requires advanced systems that are different from those used on conventional railway routes.

If developed, these corridors could expand India's high-speed rail network beyond western India and create faster links between several major metropolitan and economic centres.
