India Warns Confidence in UN Is Declining Over Delay in Security Council Reforms

India has expressed concern that global confidence in the United Nations (UN) is declining because of the organisation's inability to reform the UN Security Council and respond effectively to major international conflicts.

Speaking at a ministerial roundtable titled "Making Multilateralism Fit for the Future" at the United Nations, India's Permanent Representative to the UN, P. Harish, said the Security Council has failed to take meaningful action in several ongoing conflicts, raising serious questions about its ability to maintain international peace and security.

India Calls for Urgent UN Security Council Reforms

P. Harish said the current UN structure, created nearly 80 years ago, is no longer equipped to address today's complex geopolitical and global challenges.

He noted that negotiations on reforming the UN Security Council have remained stalled for years, with discussions repeatedly ending in statements rather than concrete outcomes.

According to India, meaningful reforms are essential to make the United Nations more representative, effective and capable of addressing emerging global issues.

Pact for the Future Needs Stronger Implementation

During his address, Harish said many commitments outlined in the Pact for the Future have not been effectively implemented.

He pointed to action areas such as ending violence, combating racism and xenophobia, promoting gender equality and strengthening UN peacekeeping operations, saying that many of these commitments have remained largely on paper.

He described the current situation as unsustainable and called for practical action rather than prolonged negotiations.

India Supports Reform While Raising Concerns

Harish said India had reservations about certain provisions of the Pact for the Future but chose to support it in a constructive spirit.

He also called for revitalising the UN General Assembly and strengthening the role of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to accelerate sustainable development and improve multilateral cooperation.

According to India, stronger international institutions are essential to address today's interconnected economic, security and humanitarian challenges.

Focus on the Global South and Sustainable Development

Highlighting India's commitment to the Global South, Harish reaffirmed the country's support for ensuring that no nation is left behind in global development efforts.

He urged international financial institutions to become more representative, responsive and development-oriented while maintaining their core mandates.

Harish also emphasised the importance of providing adequate, affordable and predictable financing to help countries achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

India Pushes for Modern Global Governance

India has consistently advocated comprehensive reforms of the United Nations, particularly the Security Council, arguing that its current structure no longer reflects contemporary geopolitical realities.

New Delhi maintains that expanding representation and improving decision-making mechanisms would strengthen the UN's credibility and enhance its ability to address international crises more effectively.
