Bank Strike From September 28 To 30, SBI-PNB Issue Customer Advisory

Bank customers across India need to plan their branch-related work carefully as bank employee unions have called a nationwide three-day strike from September 28 to September 30, 2026. The proposed action is expected to affect several physical banking services, particularly those that require customers to visit a branch or depend on staff-assisted processing. The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), with the implementation of a five-day banking week among its key demands. After a conciliation meeting involving the unions, the Indian Banks' Association and the Department of Financial Services on September 22 failed to resolve the dispute, the unions decided to proceed with the strike. The development has prompted several banks, including State Bank of India and Punjab National Bank, to advise customers to complete important banking work in advance. At the same time, authorities are taking measures to reduce disruption and keep essential banking channels available.

Bank Strike 2026: What Are The Dates?

The Bank Strike 2026 is scheduled for September 28, 29 and 30. The timing has raised concerns because September 26 is the fourth Saturday, while September 27 is Sunday. Ordinarily, this could have meant a prolonged interruption in branch services around the weekend and strike days. However, there is an important latest development. Public-sector banks and regional rural banks have been instructed to remain operational on Sunday, September 27, to help customers complete essential banking work before the strike begins. The Finance Ministry said the decision was taken to ensure that genuine banking requirements are not affected for an extended period. The Reserve Bank of India has approved the operation of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on that Sunday.

Why Are Bank Employees Going On Strike?

The main issue behind the strike is the demand for implementation of a five-day working week in the banking sector. Bank unions have maintained that the five-day working arrangement was agreed to in principle as part of the March 2024 wage settlement, but the arrangement has not yet been implemented. The unions have continued to press the government and banking management over the matter. Following the latest conciliation meeting, they said that there had been no sufficient progress to justify postponing the strike. The unions have also raised other employee-related issues, including pension-related matters and changes to performance-linked incentive arrangements. However, the five-day banking week remains one of the most prominent demands associated with the current strike.

What Will Happen To Bank Services?

The most visible impact of the Bank Strike September 2026 is expected in physical branch operations. Services that may face delays or disruption include cash deposits and withdrawals at branches, cheque-related processing, account-related documentation and other transactions that require direct assistance from bank employees. Customers who need to submit physical documents, process certain account requests or complete branch-level formalities may therefore experience delays during the strike period. However, the strike does not mean that every banking channel will stop working.

SBI Advisory: What Should Customers Do?

State Bank of India has advised customers to complete important transactions before the strike dates to minimise inconvenience. Customers who know that they need branch assistance for cash transactions, documentation, cheque-related work or other physical banking requirements should consider completing those activities before September 28. The advisory is particularly relevant for customers with time-sensitive payments, account documentation or transactions that cannot be completed through digital channels. SBI has also indicated that efforts will be made to keep essential services functioning during the strike period.

PNB And Other Banks Also Alert Customers

Punjab National Bank and other public-sector banks have also issued communications around the proposed strike. The objective of these advisories is to give customers sufficient time to plan their banking activities. Public-sector banks have been asked to take steps to reduce disruption, including ensuring that essential services and cash availability are managed appropriately. Customers should therefore check their own bank's latest notification before visiting a branch during the affected dates.

Will ATM, UPI And Online Banking Work?

One of the biggest concerns for customers is whether they will be able to access money or make digital payments during the strike. The strike primarily concerns employees and branch operations. Digital banking channels are expected to continue functioning, including UPI, internet banking, mobile banking and ATM services. However, customers should not depend entirely on a single channel for urgent transactions. If a payment, cash requirement or transfer is particularly important, completing it before the strike begins can reduce the possibility of last-minute problems. Banks have also been instructed to maintain adequate cash availability in ATMs and take contingency measures to reduce the impact on customers.

Will Banks Be Closed For Five Days?

The answer needs some clarification. The three-day employee strike is scheduled for September 28, 29 and 30. September 26 is the fourth Saturday, which is ordinarily a bank holiday, but September 27 has now been designated as a working Sunday for public-sector banks and regional rural banks. Therefore, the earlier expectation of a blanket five-day closure of branch services has changed because banks will operate on September 27 to meet customer requirements before the strike. Private-sector banks may follow different schedules and operational arrangements, so customers should check directly with their respective banks.

What Banking Work Should Customers Complete Early?

Customers with important physical banking requirements should avoid waiting until the strike begins.

These may include:

  • Cash deposits or withdrawals requiring branch assistance

  • Cheque-related work

  • Physical document submission

  • Account-related requests

  • Certain banking forms and verification work

  • Transactions that cannot be completed through digital channels

People who have regular access to UPI, ATM or internet banking may be able to continue many routine transactions during the strike.

What Is The Five-Day Banking Week Demand?

The five-day banking week demand seeks to reduce the number of working days for bank employees while keeping banking operations accessible through other channels. Bank unions have argued that the proposal has already been discussed as part of the 2024 wage settlement and should now be implemented. The government and banking management have been engaging with the unions, but the September 22 conciliation talks did not produce an agreement that led UFBU to withdraw the strike. The dispute has therefore moved into another phase, with the September 28-30 strike remaining on the unions' programme.

Could There Be Another Strike In October?

The situation could continue beyond September if the dispute remains unresolved. The bank unions have warned of an indefinite strike from October 26 if their demands are not addressed. Business Standard also reported that the unions announced this further action after deciding to proceed with the September strike. Whether that further action takes place will depend on developments between the unions, the government and banking management.

What Is The Bank Strike Date In September 2026?

The nationwide bank employee strike is scheduled for September 28, 29 and 30, 2026. The strike has been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions mainly over the demand for a five-day banking week. Branch-based banking services may be affected, while digital channels such as UPI, mobile banking, internet banking and ATMs are expected to remain available.

Where Will The Bank Strike Affect Services?

The strike is nationwide and is expected to affect participating bank branches across India. Public-sector banks and regional rural banks will also operate on Sunday, September 27, before the strike, to help customers complete essential banking work.
