Lal Topi, Blue T-Shirt: Akhilesh Yadav Adds Blue To SP’s Political Identity

The Samajwadi Party has traditionally been identified with its red cap, green accents and bicycle symbol. Now, party president Akhilesh Yadav has introduced another prominent colour into the party’s public political imagery: blue. The change has come through the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, the party’s student wing, which has adopted blue T-shirts and blue jeans as its new dress code. The red cap, however, remains part of the uniform. Akhilesh Yadav has connected the new colour with BR Ambedkar, the Constitution, democracy, the Bahujan movement and resistance against injustice. The move has attracted attention because blue has a long association with Ambedkarite and Dalit politics in Uttar Pradesh. The decision therefore carries significance beyond a change in clothing, particularly as political parties prepare for the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election.

Why Akhilesh Yadav Chose Blue

Akhilesh Yadav has publicly explained the reasoning behind the new colour. Speaking about the student wing’s new uniform, he linked blue with democracy, the Constitution, the Bahujan movement and social justice. He also associated the colour with opposition to injustice. According to his explanation, the new uniform is intended to reflect the changing outlook of younger generations and to present a modern political identity for the student organisation. The choice of jeans was also explained in social and generational terms. Yadav pointed to the historical association of jeans with workers in factories, mines and fields, while noting that jeans have subsequently become common among younger people.

Blue And The Dalit Political Connection

Blue has particular political significance in Uttar Pradesh because of its association with Dr BR Ambedkar and the Bahujan movement. The colour is also strongly identified with the Bahujan Samaj Party, which has historically built its political identity around Dalit representation and social justice. Recent reporting has therefore interpreted the SP’s decision as part of its effort to expand its appeal among Dalit voters. The Indian Express reported that the party’s move towards blue comes as it seeks a broader social coalition ahead of the 2027 Assembly election. The change is particularly notable because the SP’s traditional political identity has been associated with socialist politics and a social base that includes Yadavs and Muslims.

What Is The PDA Formula?

Akhilesh Yadav has repeatedly used the term PDA to describe a broader social coalition. The acronym traditionally refers to Pichhda, Dalit and Alpsankhyak, or backward classes, Dalits and minorities. Yadav has also given PDA additional meanings in his public messaging. The Indian Express reported that he described PDA as progressive, positive and democratic, connecting the formulation with social harmony, constitutional values and broader participation. The political importance of the formula comes from the SP’s attempt to build a coalition that extends beyond its established support groups. The new blue uniform gives the Dalit component of that formulation a more visible symbol. This is why the decision has been discussed alongside the party’s broader efforts to engage with Ambedkarite politics and Dalit communities.

Red Cap Remains Part Of The New Identity

Despite the introduction of blue, the SP has not removed its most recognisable visual symbol. The red cap remains part of the student wing’s new uniform. This means the new design combines the party’s established red identity with the newly introduced blue colour. The red cap has become closely associated with the SP over the years. Its political prominence increased particularly during Akhilesh Yadav’s leadership of the party. The combination therefore allows the party to retain an established symbol while adding another colour associated with a different political tradition.

The History Behind The Red Cap

The SP’s red cap has long been connected with its socialist identity. Mulayam Singh Yadav founded the Samajwadi Party in 1992, while the red cap became increasingly prominent in the years that followed. According to reporting on the party’s history, Mulayam Singh Yadav suggested that members of the Yuvjan Sabha, the party’s youth organisation, wear red caps in 1998. The cap subsequently became one of the most recognisable symbols associated with the SP. The colour red has also featured prominently in the party’s political campaigns and public events. Under Akhilesh Yadav, the red cap developed into an important part of the party’s visual identity. The addition of blue therefore represents a change in the party’s presentation without eliminating its traditional symbol.

When The Red Cap Became An Election Issue

The red cap has also been the subject of political attacks. During the 2021-22 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to the red cap during a rally and used the phrase “red alert” while criticising the SP. The remarks connected the party’s symbol with allegations concerning law and order and governance. Akhilesh Yadav responded by giving the phrase a different political meaning, arguing that the red cap represented an alert over issues such as unemployment, inflation and farmers’ concerns. The episode demonstrated how party colours and symbols can become part of political communication during election campaigns. Five years later, the SP is retaining that red identity while simultaneously placing greater emphasis on blue.

Why The Change Matters Ahead Of 2027

The timing of the new uniform has added to the political discussion surrounding the SP’s preparations for the next Uttar Pradesh Assembly election. The party has been seeking to broaden its social coalition through the PDA framework. The adoption of blue is being interpreted by political observers as one component of that effort, particularly because of the colour’s association with Ambedkarite and Dalit politics. However, the significance of the move should be distinguished from its potential electoral impact. A new colour or uniform can communicate a political message, but it cannot by itself establish whether a particular community will support a party. The response of voters, the party’s organisation, candidates, alliances and campaign issues will all form part of the wider political environment before the 2027 election.

SP’s Focus On Dalit Outreach

The SP’s interest in Dalit outreach predates the new blue uniform. The party has previously attempted to expand its presence among Dalit communities through organisational initiatives and political messaging around BR Ambedkar and social justice. The current emphasis on blue adds a stronger visual dimension to that outreach. By connecting the colour with Ambedkar, the Constitution and the Bahujan movement, Akhilesh Yadav has given the student wing a symbol that carries a different historical association from the party’s traditional red. The move has also prompted discussion about the political space historically occupied by the BSP.

The BSP And The Politics Of Blue

The Bahujan Samaj Party has historically used blue as one of its most recognisable colours. The colour has become closely connected with Ambedkarite politics and the political mobilisation of Dalit communities in Uttar Pradesh. The SP’s decision to adopt blue has therefore generated a wider debate over the political meaning of the colour. NDTV's recent analysis noted that the dispute over blue involves a much longer history connected with Ambedkarite politics and different forms of social and political mobilisation. The SP’s adoption of blue does not mean that the BSP’s historical association with the colour has disappeared. Instead, it adds another political party to the contemporary debate over how the colour is used and what it communicates to voters.

What Election Data Shows

The 2024 Lok Sabha election provides important background to the current discussion, although election results and survey findings describe past voting behaviour and should not be treated as predictions for the 2027 election. The SP won 37 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2024. The BSP did not win a seat in the state in that election. Post-poll research by CSDS-Lokniti provides additional information about the social composition of voting in the election. Its survey data can be used to examine patterns among different caste and community groups, but such historical findings cannot establish how those groups will vote in a future election. The 2024 result nevertheless became an important reference point in discussions about the SP’s PDA strategy and its attempts to build a wider coalition.

The BJP Factor

The SP’s outreach to Dalit voters is also taking place in a political environment where the BJP has developed its own support among sections of Dalit communities. Historical election studies have shown differences in voting behaviour between Jatav and non-Jatav Dalit voters, with political preferences varying across elections and social groups. Lokniti-CSDS data provides a detailed record of these voting patterns. That history helps explain why Dalit representation has become an important part of electoral strategy in Uttar Pradesh. For the SP, the challenge is to communicate its PDA framework beyond slogans and symbols. For other parties, the same social groups remain an important part of their own political outreach.

Blue T-Shirt As A Youth Symbol

The new uniform is specifically for the Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, making young voters and students another important part of the initiative. Akhilesh Yadav has described the blue clothing and jeans as reflecting a younger generation and changing social attitudes. The Indian Express reported that he linked the jeans to both working-class history and contemporary youth culture. This gives the new uniform two distinct messages: blue carries the political associations of Ambedkar, the Constitution and the Bahujan movement, while jeans provide a more contemporary youth-oriented image. The red cap then connects the new look back to the established identity of the Samajwadi Party.

A Combination Of Old And New Symbols

The most notable feature of the change may be the combination itself. The SP is not replacing its red cap with a completely different identity. Instead, it is adding blue clothing to the existing red symbol. This creates a visual combination of socialist tradition, Ambedkarite symbolism and youth-oriented presentation. Whether that combination becomes a lasting political identity will depend on how widely the new dress code is adopted and how the party uses the symbolism in its organisational and electoral messaging.

What The Blue Move Signals

The adoption of blue is being presented by Akhilesh Yadav as a statement about democracy, constitutional values, social justice and resistance to injustice. At the same time, political reporting has interpreted the decision in the context of the SP’s effort to broaden its social base, particularly among Dalits and younger voters. The development is therefore part of a wider political conversation in Uttar Pradesh about representation, social coalitions and the meaning attached to political symbols. The red cap continues to represent the SP’s established identity, while the new blue T-shirt adds another layer to the party’s public image.
