Air India Pilot Found Drunk Before Zurich-Delhi Flight, Suspended

An Air India pilot was removed from duty shortly before a scheduled Zurich-to-Delhi flight after an alcohol screening raised concerns at Zurich Airport. The first officer was due to operate Air India flight AI 151 on September 6, but he was taken off the aircraft after authorities suspected that he had consumed alcohol before reporting for duty. According to officials, the pilot failed an initial alcohol test carried out at the Swiss airport. A second test was also conducted, but its final result is still awaited. The pilot was subsequently sent back to India as a passenger and has remained suspended while the airline awaits the outcome of the final medical examination and investigation. The incident has drawn attention because the pilot was removed before the aircraft departed, meaning the suspected violation was identified during pre-flight procedures rather than after the aircraft was airborne.

What Happened To Air India Flight AI 151?

The Zurich Delhi flight, operating as AI 151, was scheduled to leave Zurich for the Indian capital on September 6. However, after the first officer was removed from operating duties, the flight could not depart according to its original schedule. The aircraft eventually operated to Delhi the following day. The disruption came directly after the suspected alcohol violation was detected and the pilot was taken off duty. Reports indicate that local authorities were alerted after concerns were raised about the pilot before departure. A preliminary breath test was conducted, followed by further medical evaluation. The case was then referred through the relevant aviation regulatory channels. The Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation said necessary measures had been taken under Swiss and international regulations. It also said India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation, or DGCA, and the operator had been informed.

Pilot Remains Suspended Pending Further Examination

The first officer has not been cleared to return to flying duties. Air India officials said he remains under suspension while the final medical examination report and investigation are completed. This distinction is important because the preliminary alcohol test and the final medical findings are separate stages of the process. The secondary test conducted in Zurich is also awaited, according to reports. Therefore, the immediate action against the pilot should be understood as a suspension pending the outcome of the investigation rather than a final conclusion about every aspect of the case.

Air India Says It Has Zero-Tolerance Safety Policy

Air India has said that it follows a zero-tolerance approach towards violations involving safety, regulatory requirements and company procedures. The airline said flight crew members are expected to maintain strict standards of professionalism and accountability. It also highlighted regular compliance and awareness programmes and mandatory testing for psychoactive substances. According to the airline, disciplinary measures can be stricter than the minimum requirements set by regulators when a confirmed violation is established. The latest incident has therefore put renewed attention on the airline's internal monitoring procedures and the systems used to ensure that crew members are fit to operate flights.

Why The Latest Case Is Drawing More Attention

The Zurich incident comes only weeks after another serious case involving an Air India pilot. In that earlier incident, the pilot in command of a Phuket-to-Delhi flight tested positive for marijuana following an aviation safety incident. The Phuket-Delhi aircraft, operating as AI 2379, experienced a sudden loss of altitude while flying over Odisha on August 4. The Airbus A320neo was carrying passengers and crew when the aircraft lost around 300 feet of altitude. Several people on board were injured, although the aircraft later landed safely in Delhi. The pilot subsequently tested positive for marijuana in a confirmatory test and was later dismissed by Air India. He had said in a flight safety statement that he had been experiencing sleep difficulties and had been prescribed medication by his doctor.

Air India Expands Substance Testing For Pilots

Following the earlier Phuket incident, Air India announced mandatory substance testing for all its pilots. The expanded testing programme covers pilots across Air India and Air India Express and is intended to identify prohibited substances and certain medications covered by aviation rules. The airline also said it was increasing awareness programmes, strengthening reporting requirements and monitoring compliance and operational conduct. The broader testing programme goes beyond the minimum regulatory requirement of random testing for a portion of flight crew each year, according to Reuters.

What Happens Next In The Zurich Case?

The next stage will depend on the final medical examination, the secondary test result and the findings of the relevant authorities. The pilot remains suspended while the process continues. Air India is expected to take further disciplinary action if a violation is confirmed, in line with its stated policies and applicable aviation regulations. The DGCA is also involved in the regulatory handling of the case, while Swiss authorities have already confirmed that the necessary action was taken at Zurich Airport.

What happened to the Air India pilot at Zurich Airport?

An Air India first officer was removed from flight AI 151 before its scheduled Zurich-to-Delhi departure on September 6 after failing an initial alcohol test. A second test was conducted, and its result is awaited. The pilot was sent back to India as a passenger and remains suspended pending further medical examination and investigation.

Why was the Zurich-Delhi flight delayed?

Air India flight AI 151 could not operate according to its original schedule after the pilot was removed from duty. The flight was operated to Delhi the following day.

Is the pilot's case finally decided?

No. The pilot remains suspended while the final medical examination and investigation are pending. The secondary test conducted in Zurich is also awaited, according to reports.

What action has Air India taken?

Air India has reiterated its zero-tolerance approach to safety and regulatory violations. The airline has also strengthened substance testing, compliance awareness and monitoring procedures for flight crew.
