Air India Captain’s Initial Drug Screening Triggers Further Tests After Altitude Loss

Air India flight AI2379, operating from Phuket to New Delhi, experienced a sudden loss of around 300 feet in altitude during cruise on August 4. The aircraft later stabilised and landed safely in Delhi, according to India’s civil aviation ministry.

Following the incident, both members of the flight crew underwent screening for psychoactive substances under standard aviation safety procedures.

The initial screening of the pilot-in-command produced a result that requires further laboratory testing. Authorities have sent the pilot’s samples to a designated laboratory, with the final report still awaited.

Air India Flight Lost Around 300 Feet

Flight AI2379 was operated by an Airbus A320 aircraft registered as VT-EXO.

During the journey from Phuket to Delhi, the aircraft suddenly lost approximately 300 feet of altitude while cruising. The aircraft subsequently stabilised and continued its journey before landing safely at Delhi airport.

No further details about the cause of the altitude change have been disclosed while the investigation continues.

Pilot Taken Off Roster Pending Investigation

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation has removed both crew members from flight duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

The incident has been classified as a “serious incident” and is being investigated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau.

Officials have not disclosed which substance, if any, was indicated by the initial screening. Authorities are waiting for confirmatory laboratory testing before reaching any conclusion.

An initial screening result does not by itself establish that a pilot consumed or was impaired by a prohibited substance.

Air India Says Test Results Not Shared

Air India said it was aware that post-flight screening had been conducted in accordance with applicable procedures.

However, the airline said authorities had not shared the test results with the company, leaving it unable to comment on the findings.

The airline also said it regularly conducts drug testing of crew members in accordance with civil aviation regulations and would continue cooperating with the authorities during the investigation.

Investigation Continues Into Serious Incident

The final laboratory report is expected to provide further information about the initial screening result.

Investigators are also examining the sudden altitude loss and other circumstances surrounding the flight.

The incident comes at a time when India's aviation sector is facing increased scrutiny over flight safety, crew procedures and regulatory compliance.

Authorities are expected to determine whether the altitude change was linked to an operational, technical or other factor and whether the initial screening result has any connection to the incident.
