IndiGo Vadodara-Delhi Flight Power Failure Leaves Passengers Sweating in Darkness

Passengers travelling on an IndiGo flight from Vadodara to Delhi faced a difficult and uncomfortable situation after a sudden power failure left the aircraft without lights and air conditioning for nearly 30 minutes before takeoff.

The incident took place on IndiGo flight 6E 657 at Vadodara airport on May 19. According to reports, the aircraft was preparing for departure when the Ground Power Unit (GPU), which supplies electricity to the aircraft while it is parked, suddenly stopped working. As a result, the cabin lights went off and the air conditioning system also failed.

With the aircraft doors closed and temperatures already high due to the summer heat, passengers were forced to sit inside a hot and dark cabin without proper ventilation. Videos shared online showed passengers sweating heavily and using papers and magazines to fan themselves while waiting for the issue to be resolved.

Several passengers reportedly became angry and frustrated because there was little information provided during the delay. Many said the lack of communication made the situation more stressful, especially for elderly passengers, women, and children onboard.

The flight was eventually delayed by more than an hour before power was restored and the aircraft departed for Delhi safely. IndiGo later confirmed that the delay was caused by a technical problem linked to the airport ground power system.

Although no injuries were reported, the incident has raised fresh concerns about passenger safety and emergency handling inside aircraft during technical failures.

Summer temperatures in many parts of India are already extremely high. In such weather conditions, even a short loss of ventilation inside a closed aircraft can quickly become dangerous. Passengers can suffer from dehydration, breathing problems, dizziness, and panic if cooling systems stop working for too long.

The incident also highlights the importance of backup systems at airports. Ground Power Units are basic but essential equipment that help keep aircraft systems running while planes remain parked before takeoff. Aviation experts believe airports and airlines should always have emergency backup arrangements ready in case one system suddenly fails.

At the same time, the situation once again exposed a common problem faced by airline passengers during delays — poor communication. Passengers are more likely to remain calm if airline staff clearly explain the problem and provide regular updates. Silence and confusion often make passengers feel ignored and helpless.

India’s aviation sector is growing rapidly, with airlines carrying millions of passengers every month. But along with expansion, airlines must also improve passenger care, emergency preparedness, and technical support systems.

For many passengers onboard the Vadodara-Delhi flight, the experience became more than just a normal delay. Sitting in darkness and extreme heat inside a packed aircraft created fear, discomfort, and frustration that could have been handled better with faster response and clearer communication.

The incident should now serve as a warning for both airlines and airport authorities. Technical failures may happen unexpectedly, but passenger safety, comfort, and proper communication must always remain the top priority.

As air travel continues to increase across India, passengers expect not only affordable tickets and timely flights but also safe and respectful treatment during difficult situations. The Vadodara incident is a reminder that even small technical failures can turn into major problems when emergency response systems are not strong enough.
