Glacier Melt Triggers Flash Flood in Himachal's Lahaul-Spiti, 50 Tourist Vehicles Stranded

glacier melt triggered a flash flood-like situation in Himachal Pradesh's Lahaul-Spiti district, washing away a section of the road near Jhalma Nallah and leaving more than 50 tourist vehicles stranded. Authorities launched immediate restoration work, while officials confirmed that no casualties or injuries have been reported.

According to the district administration, the incident was caused by a rapid increase in glacier meltwater and not by rainfall, as there was no rain in the region when the flooding occurred.

Road Washed Away After Sudden Glacier Melt

The sudden surge in water flow damaged a crucial stretch of road at Jhalma Nallah, temporarily cutting off road connectivity in the remote Himalayan district.

The flooding stranded dozens of tourist vehicles travelling through the area, prompting authorities to deploy emergency response teams to restore access as quickly as possible.

Officials said restoration work began immediately after the incident.

Over 50 Tourist Vehicles Stranded

Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla said that more than 50 tourist vehicles were stranded after the road was washed away.

She said the damaged road was expected to be repaired within a few hours, after which stranded tourists would be safely escorted out of the affected area.

Authorities advised travellers to follow official updates and avoid unnecessary movement until road connectivity is fully restored.

BRO Begins Emergency Restoration Work

The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), along with the local administration, launched emergency operations to repair the damaged road and reopen traffic.

Engineering teams reached the site soon after the incident and started clearing debris while rebuilding the washed-away section.

Officials expressed confidence that normal traffic would resume once the road becomes safe for vehicles.

No Casualties Reported

Despite the sudden flooding and road damage, officials confirmed that no injuries or loss of life have been reported.

The administration continues to monitor water levels and weather conditions to prevent any further risks in the area.

Emergency teams remain on alert until the restoration work is completed.

Why Glacier Melt Can Cause Flash Floods

Experts say rapid glacier melting can dramatically increase the flow of water in mountain streams and nallahs, particularly during periods of rising temperatures.

Unlike floods caused by heavy rainfall, glacier melt floods can occur suddenly even under clear weather conditions, posing serious risks to roads, bridges, and remote settlements across the Himalayan region.

Authorities have urged travellers visiting high-altitude areas to stay informed about weather and glacier conditions before beginning their journey.
