The death toll from this year's floods in Assam has increased to 78 after three more people lost their lives in the past 24 hours, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Officials said two deaths were reported from Sivasagar district and one from Golaghat, while floodwaters continue to affect thousands of families across the state.

More Than Three Lakh People Remain Affected

The latest ASDMA bulletin said 3,00,031 people are still affected by flooding across seven districts of Assam.

Among them, Charaideo remains the worst-hit district with 1,37,561 affected residents, followed by Sivasagar (84,600) and Jorhat (49,911).

Floodwaters continue to impact 551 villages, disrupting daily life and damaging homes, roads and public infrastructure.

Thousands Living in Relief Camps

Authorities said over 16,500 displaced people are currently staying in 71 relief camps established across the affected districts.

Additionally, 30 relief distribution centres are providing food and essential supplies to more than 72,000 people.

Medical teams, veterinary staff and disaster response agencies remain deployed to assist affected communities and support ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Agriculture and Livestock Suffer Heavy Losses

The floods have also caused extensive damage to agriculture and livestock.

According to the ASDMA, around 21,523 hectares of crop land remain submerged. More than 11,000 animals have been washed away, while another 17,000 livestock have been affected by the flooding.

Authorities also reported damage to embankments, roads, schools, houses and other public infrastructure in several districts.

IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Warning

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland from July 30 to August 1.

The weather department warned that the rainfall could particularly affect the Assam districts of Tinsukia, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur, which border Arunachal Pradesh.

Orange Alert Issued for Several Districts

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for Tinsukia district in Assam, urging residents to remain prepared for severe weather.

Orange Alerts have also been issued for Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha districts in Nagaland. Heavy rainfall in these areas could also impact neighbouring Assam districts, including Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.

Authorities Urge Residents to Stay Alert

The IMD warned that continuous rainfall could worsen waterlogging, flash floods, slow traffic movement and increase the risk of landslides in vulnerable areas.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said district administrations and emergency response teams are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to follow official advisories, avoid flood-prone locations and remain vigilant as heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the coming days.
