Adani Power Evaluates Nuclear Technologies, Awaits Government Policy for Private Sector Entry

Adani Power is evaluating both domestic and international nuclear reactor technologies as it prepares for future investments in India's nuclear energy sector. However, the company says its plans will depend on the Indian government finalising regulations that allow greater private-sector participation.

The announcement came during the company's post-earnings conference call, where executives outlined their long-term strategy for expanding into clean energy.

Investment Depends on Policy Framework

Adani Power said it cannot make final investment decisions until the government releases a clear regulatory framework governing private participation in nuclear power generation.

The company has previously announced a target of developing 10 gigawatts (GW) of nuclear power capacity by 2035.

Chief Executive Shersingh Khyalia said future technology choices would depend on affordability and the ability to deliver cost-effective electricity for consumers and power distribution companies.

Potential Sites Under Evaluation

The company is assessing potential nuclear project locations, including Bina and Nigrie in Madhya Pradesh.

Executives said technical studies are underway and that the company is preparing potential project sites so construction can begin quickly once regulatory approvals are in place.

India Expanding Nuclear Energy

India is accelerating the expansion of its nuclear power sector as part of its long-term clean energy strategy.

The government aims to increase nuclear generation capacity from approximately 8.8 GW today to 100 GW by 2047 while opening the sector to greater participation by private and foreign companies.

Competition Growing in Nuclear Sector

State-owned Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) remains the country's only nuclear plant operator and plans to develop 50 GW of capacity.

Meanwhile, state-run NTPC is targeting 30 GW of nuclear capacity.

Several private companies, including Tata Power and Reliance Industries, are also exploring investments in nuclear energy, making the sector increasingly competitive.

If Adani Power proceeds with its plans, it could become one of India's largest private nuclear power operators.
