Iran Invites PM Modi to Khamenei’s State Funeral, New Delhi Yet to Take Call

New Delhi/Tehran: Iran has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the state funeral of the country's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, marking a significant diplomatic outreach ahead of one of the most closely watched events in the Middle East this year.

According to diplomatic sources, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has invited Prime Minister Modi to participate in the funeral and burial ceremonies scheduled to be held between July 4 and July 9. The ceremonies are expected to draw leaders, senior officials and dignitaries from across the world as Iran prepares to bid farewell to the influential leader who shaped the country's political and religious landscape for decades.

While the invitation has been formally conveyed, the Government of India has not yet indicated whether Prime Minister Modi will attend the event. Officials in New Delhi have so far maintained silence on the matter, and no official statement has been issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The invitation comes at a time when India continues to balance its strategic ties across the region. New Delhi shares longstanding civilisational and economic relations with Iran, while simultaneously maintaining strong partnerships with Israel, the United States and key Gulf nations. As a result, any decision regarding India's participation is expected to be carefully weighed against broader diplomatic and geopolitical considerations.

Iranian authorities have announced an elaborate programme of mourning events across multiple cities, culminating in the burial ceremony later in the week. Large crowds are expected to participate in the ceremonies, which Iranian officials have described as a historic national event.

Diplomatic observers believe Tehran is keen to showcase international participation during the funeral proceedings and is expected to host representatives from several countries. The invitation to Prime Minister Modi is being viewed as a reflection of the importance Iran attaches to its relationship with India despite the rapidly evolving political dynamics in the region.

The development has also sparked discussion within diplomatic circles about the level of India's representation at the event. While Prime Minister Modi's attendance remains uncertain, New Delhi could alternatively choose to send a senior minister or a high-level delegation to represent the country.

For now, the focus remains on the Indian government's response. With the funeral ceremonies approaching, an official decision from New Delhi is expected in the coming days.

Until then, the invitation remains a significant diplomatic gesture from Tehran and another reminder of India's growing importance in the geopolitical calculations of the Middle East.
