Amit Shah in Kolkata to Select BJP Legislative Leader in West Bengal

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata for a crucial political meeting with newly elected BJP MLAs as the party moves closer to forming its first government in West Bengal. The meeting is considered one of the most important moments in the state’s political history because it will decide the BJP’s legislative leader, who is expected to become the next Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The BJP secured a major victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, ending years of Trinamool Congress rule led by Mamata Banerjee. The election result has changed the political landscape of the state and marked a major breakthrough for the BJP in eastern India.

Amit Shah has been appointed as the BJP’s central observer for the leadership selection process. Senior BJP leaders and newly elected MLAs are expected to participate in the legislative party meeting in Kolkata, where the final decision regarding the next Chief Minister will be taken.

Political discussions in West Bengal are currently focused on who will become the BJP’s first Chief Minister in the state. Several names are being discussed, with senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari seen as one of the strongest contenders because of his major role in the party’s election campaign and organizational growth in Bengal.

Reports suggest the swearing-in ceremony of the new government may take place soon after the legislative leader is officially elected. Preparations for the formation of the new government are already underway in Kolkata.

The BJP’s victory in West Bengal is being viewed as one of the party’s biggest political achievements in recent years. For decades, the state’s politics remained dominated by regional and Left parties. The BJP’s rise reflects changing voter preferences and growing political competition in the region.

The elections were fought on major issues such as development, corruption, unemployment, law and order, political violence, and welfare schemes. BJP leaders claimed that voters wanted political change and stronger governance in the state.

At the same time, the election defeat has created major challenges for the Trinamool Congress. Mamata Banerjee has questioned the election process and strongly criticized the results. She has also held meetings with newly elected TMC MLAs following the party’s setback.

The transition of power in West Bengal is expected to remain politically sensitive because of the state’s long history of intense political rivalry. Security arrangements in Kolkata and other important locations have also been strengthened ahead of the BJP legislature party meeting and upcoming swearing-in ceremony.

Political experts believe the new BJP government will face major responsibilities after taking office. Issues such as employment generation, industrial investment, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and maintaining political stability are expected to become key priorities.

The formation of a BJP government in West Bengal is also politically important at the national level. The state holds strategic importance in Indian politics because of its large population, economic potential, and influence in eastern India.

Amit Shah’s visit to Kolkata has therefore become more than just a leadership meeting. It represents a major political transition that could reshape West Bengal’s future political direction and strengthen the BJP’s position in the region ahead of future national elections.
