Uttarakhand Abolishes Madarsa Education Board, New School Rules Take Effect

Uttarakhand government has officially abolished the Uttarakhand Madarsa Education Board, introducing a new regulatory framework for recognised madarsas across the state from July 1, 2026.

Under the new system, all recognised madarsas will come under the State Minority Educational Institution Authority, which will oversee their recognition, curriculum, administration, and compliance with educational standards.

The government says the reform aims to integrate madarsa education with mainstream academic standards while allowing religious instruction to continue.

Recognised Madarsas to Follow NCERT Curriculum

As part of the new policy, recognised madarsas will be required to adopt an NCERT-based curriculum alongside traditional religious education.

Students will study subjects such as science, mathematics, computer studies, social science, and languages, bringing the institutions closer to the academic framework followed by regular schools.

The state government has said that religious education alone is not sufficient to prepare students for higher education and future employment opportunities.

School Rules Now Apply to Madarsas

Under the revised regulations, recognised madarsas must comply with the same academic and administrative standards that apply to schools in Uttarakhand.

The State Minority Educational Institution Authority will monitor curriculum implementation, institutional recognition, and compliance with government guidelines.

Madarsas that fail to meet the prescribed standards may face regulatory action.

Unrecognised Madarsas Face Greater Scrutiny

The policy is expected to have a major impact on nearly 500 unrecognised madarsas operating in Uttarakhand.

According to government estimates, these institutions have been functioning without official recognition for several years.

Authorities have indicated that unregistered madarsas that do not comply with the new regulations could face closure.

Thousands of Students Affected

An estimated 60,000 to 70,000 students are enrolled in madarsas across Uttarakhand.

The government says the reforms are intended to provide students with broader educational opportunities by combining religious studies with nationally recognised academic subjects.

Supporters argue the move will improve educational standards and career prospects, while critics are expected to closely monitor how the policy affects minority educational institutions and religious education in the state.
