India Hits Record Foodgrain Output, Becomes World’s Top Rice Producer: President

President of India Smt. Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday said that India has achieved record foodgrain production of over 350 million tonnes, marking a major milestone in the country’s agricultural growth. Addressing a joint sitting of Parliament, she said the achievement reflects the resilience of Indian farmers and the impact of sustained policy support for the agriculture sector.

The President said that with a production of nearly 150 million tonnes, India has emerged as the world’s largest rice producing country. She noted that strong procurement systems, improved irrigation coverage and farmer focused schemes have contributed to enhanced productivity and food security.

Highlighting diversification in agriculture, President Murmu said India has also become the second largest fish producing country globally, reflecting the success of initiatives linked to the blue economy. She added that fisheries, dairy and livestock sectors are now playing a growing role in boosting rural incomes.

The President said India continues to hold a leading position in milk production, crediting the strength of the cooperative movement for empowering farmers and ensuring stable incomes. She added that cooperative institutions have helped integrate small producers into organised markets.

Referring to broader agricultural reforms, the President said the government is working to reduce dependence on imports of key agricultural commodities. She highlighted national missions on edible oils, oilseeds and pulses aimed at improving self reliance and stabilising domestic supply.

The President also emphasised efforts to promote millets, known as Shree Anna, both domestically and globally. She said millet promotion supports sustainable farming practices while providing additional income opportunities for farmers.

Concluding her remarks on agriculture, President Murmu said a prosperous farmer is central to the vision of Viksit Bharat. She added that continued investment in agriculture, allied sectors and rural infrastructure will remain a priority to ensure food security, economic stability and inclusive growth.
