Maharashtra Declares Drought In 265 Talukas, Relief Measures Announced

The Maharashtra government has declared drought conditions in 265 of the state's 358 talukas, covering about 74 per cent of the state's talukas. The decision follows an assessment of rainfall shortages and prolonged dry conditions during the 2026 Kharif season. The government has activated Maharashtra Drought Trigger-1 under its drought management framework. The first stage, known as Trigger-1, is activated when rainfall is more than 25 per cent below the required level along with a continuous dry spell of at least 21 days. The move allows the administration to begin relief measures in areas meeting the prescribed conditions.

Crop Damage Assessment Ordered Across Affected Areas

District Collectors have been instructed to begin crop damage assessments in the affected talukas. Officials have also been asked to record photographs and GPS coordinates during field surveys so that the actual condition of crops can be documented. This assessment will be important for determining further assistance to farmers. Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar said the actual financial assistance for farmers would be decided after the ground-level assessment is completed.

Relief For Farmers And Agricultural Loans

The government has announced several measures for drought-affected communities. Farmers will receive an exemption from land revenue, while recovery of agriculture-related loans has been put on hold and crop loans can be restructured. The measures are aimed at reducing immediate financial pressure on farming families during a period when crop losses and water shortages are affecting rural livelihoods.

Agricultural Electricity And Water Supply Measures

Relief has also been announced for agricultural electricity consumers. Existing concessions for agricultural pumps up to 7.5 horsepower will continue, while concessions will also be extended to higher-capacity pumps. In water-scarce villages, electricity connections to agricultural pumps will not be disconnected. The government has also ordered arrangements for drinking water, including deployment of tankers wherever necessary.

Employment And Foodgrain Support

Under the Employment Guarantee Scheme, rules will be relaxed to create additional work opportunities in affected areas. Farmers and agricultural labourers who depend on farming for their livelihood will also receive foodgrain support. The government has further directed authorities to make arrangements for cattle fodder and water so that livestock in drought-hit villages are not left without essential supplies.

Why Was Trigger-1 Activated In Maharashtra?

Maharashtra Drought Trigger-1 was activated because the affected areas recorded a rainfall deficit of more than 25 per cent along with a prolonged dry spell lasting 21 days. It is the first stage of the state's drought management framework.

Which Parts Of Maharashtra Are Affected?

The 265 affected talukas are spread across 32 districts. Several areas in Marathwada, Vidarbha and other drought-prone parts of Maharashtra are among those facing rainfall shortages and agricultural stress. Districts including Dharashiv, Beed, Solapur, Latur, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Buldhana, Amravati, Yavatmal, Nagpur and Chandrapur have reported affected areas.

Large-Scale Water Conservation Work Planned

The state government has also announced plans for large-scale water conservation works as part of its drought response. These measures are intended to improve water availability and strengthen preparedness in affected areas. For farmers, the immediate focus will remain on crop-loss assessment, financial relief, access to water, electricity concessions and employment support. The coming assessment will determine the extent of additional assistance required across the affected talukas.
