Tiger Attack Kills Woman Worker At Jaipur's Nahargarh Park

A tragic incident at a wildlife facility in Jaipur has left a family devastated and sparked concern among people living around the area. A woman worker was killed after a tiger attacked her while she was carrying out routine work inside an enclosure at Nahargarh Biological Park. The incident took place when a group of women had entered the enclosure to cut grass. The situation changed suddenly when the tiger entered the area and attacked one of the workers. Other women present at the location immediately ran for safety. Some reportedly climbed onto fencing and nearby trees in an attempt to stay out of the animal's reach. The victim could not escape and suffered fatal injuries in the attack. The woman was identified as Sugna Devi. Following the incident, forest officials reached the location, brought the animal under control and recovered the victim's body. The incident has caused fear among nearby residents and has also led to questions about how workers were allowed to enter an enclosure while a tiger was present.

How The Tiger Attack Happened

According to the information available from local reports, Sugna Devi and several other women were carrying out grass-cutting work inside enclosure number 16. The workers had reportedly entered the area earlier and returned the following morning to continue collecting grass. During this period, an employee reportedly opened the enclosure without knowing that the women were still inside. The tiger, identified as Shivaji, then entered the area and attacked Sugna Devi. The other workers immediately tried to escape. With very little time to react, some women climbed the enclosure fencing while others moved towards nearby trees to protect themselves.

The attack proved fatal for Sugna Devi.

The incident has raised serious concerns about communication between workers and park staff, particularly before opening or accessing an enclosure containing a dangerous animal.

Forest Team Reached The Spot

After officials were informed about the attack, a forest department team reached the location. The tiger was tranquilised and brought under control so that the remaining workers could be safely removed from the area. Officials then recovered Sugna Devi's body. The rescue operation also focused on the women who had been stranded on the fencing and in trees after fleeing from the tiger. The incident created a tense situation inside the park as officials had to secure the area before beginning further action. Mobile network problems in the surrounding area reportedly made it difficult for forest department officials to be contacted immediately, potentially delaying the initial response.

Villagers Demand Investigation

The incident quickly led to anger among local residents and villagers. People gathered after learning about the death and demanded answers from the authorities. They questioned how the workers were allowed to enter the enclosure and why adequate precautions were not taken before the enclosure was opened. Villagers also demanded that available CCTV footage be examined to establish exactly how the incident unfolded. They want authorities to determine whether there was any lapse in procedure or communication that contributed to the tragedy. The demand for a detailed investigation has increased pressure on the forest department to establish responsibility and take action if negligence is found.

Woman Was Family's Main Earner

The death has had a particularly severe impact on Sugna Devi's family. According to local residents, she was the primary earning member of the household. Her sudden death has therefore created not only an emotional crisis but also a serious financial problem for the family. Villagers told officials that the family needs immediate assistance following the tragedy. They have demanded financial compensation and support from the government so that the family can manage its expenses after losing its main source of income. The issue has also highlighted the difficulties faced by workers employed in physically demanding jobs around wildlife facilities.

Family Faces Additional Hardship

The situation is reportedly even more difficult because Sugna Devi's husband is recovering from serious burns suffered in an electrocution incident. With her husband already facing health and recovery challenges, Sugna Devi had reportedly been supporting the family financially. Her death has therefore left the household in an extremely vulnerable situation. Residents have urged the administration to consider long-term assistance rather than limiting support to immediate compensation. There has also been a demand to consider employment for her children to provide the family with a more stable source of income.

Officials Meet Villagers

Following the incident, Deputy Conservator of Forests Ashish Vyas, police officials and local MLA Prashant Sharma met with villagers. The meeting focused on the circumstances surrounding the attack, compensation for the family and possible action against anyone found responsible for negligence. Forest officials assured residents that action would be taken if an employee is found to have violated safety procedures. The government is also expected to be approached regarding financial assistance for the victim's family. Authorities have indicated that possible employment support for the woman's children may also be considered.

Questions Over Worker Safety

The incident has brought the safety of workers inside wildlife parks into sharp focus. Workers who enter animal enclosures for cleaning, grass cutting, maintenance or other duties operate in areas where even a small communication error can create a life-threatening situation. A strict system is therefore needed to ensure that every enclosure is checked before workers enter or staff members open gates. The tragedy has raised questions about whether such safety checks were properly followed in this case. Authorities are expected to examine the sequence of events and determine whether established protocols were followed.

CCTV Footage Could Provide Key Answers

Villagers have specifically called for CCTV footage from the park to be reviewed. Cameras could help investigators determine when the women entered the enclosure, when the gate was opened and how the tiger moved into the area. Footage could also help establish the response time of park staff and provide information about the sequence of events before and after the attack. If any safety violation occurred, CCTV evidence could become important in determining accountability. The demand for a review also reflects the growing expectation that wildlife facilities should use technology to improve worker safety.

Who Was Tiger Shivaji?

The tiger involved in the incident was identified as Shivaji. Earlier records show that Shivaji was brought to Nahargarh Biological Park from Gwalior in 2022 as part of a wildlife exchange programme. At the time, the male tiger was reported to be four years old. Nahargarh Biological Park houses several species of wildlife, including Bengal tigers and other large carnivores. Rajasthan Tourism describes the park as a conservation and education facility spread across a large area near Jaipur. The presence of large carnivores makes strict access control and safety procedures particularly important.

Nahargarh Biological Park's Role

Nahargarh Biological Park is located near Jaipur and forms part of the wider wildlife landscape of the region. The Rajasthan Tourism Department describes the park as a place focused on conservation, education and research. It is home to a variety of animals and birds and is situated in the Aravalli landscape. The facility attracts visitors because of its diverse wildlife collection. However, incidents involving workers can raise different safety concerns because employees may need to work close to animal enclosures as part of routine maintenance. The latest incident has therefore renewed attention on safety arrangements for both visitors and workers.

Need For Stronger Safety Protocols

The tragedy has highlighted the importance of clear safety procedures at wildlife facilities. Before any enclosure is opened or entered, staff should have a clear system to confirm the location of workers and the status of the animal inside. Communication between workers, guards, animal keepers and other employees is equally important. Authorities may now review these procedures following the incident. The aim would be to prevent a similar situation from happening again and ensure that workers performing routine duties are adequately protected.

Compensation And Support Demanded

Villagers have asked the government to provide financial assistance to Sugna Devi's family. They have also raised the possibility of providing a contractual job to one of her children so that the household can continue to meet its financial needs. For the family, the issue is not limited to compensation. The loss of an earning member can create long-term financial pressure, especially when another family member is already recovering from a serious injury. Local residents have therefore urged officials to provide meaningful and sustained support.

Investigation Into Possible Negligence

The forest department is expected to examine whether any staff member failed to follow safety procedures. The reported opening of the enclosure without knowledge that workers were still inside has become a key concern. Officials have assured villagers that action will be taken against anyone found responsible. A detailed investigation could help answer several questions, including who authorised access to the enclosure, whether the workers had been properly accounted for and whether communication systems were functioning at the time.

Jaipur, Rajasthan Wildlife Safety

The incident occurred at Nahargarh Biological Park in Jaipur, Rajasthan, a major wildlife facility located in the Aravalli landscape. The park is known for its conservation work and houses several species, including Bengal tiger and other large carnivores. The tragedy has drawn attention beyond the park because it involves a local worker who was reportedly the main earner for her family. Residents are now demanding stronger wildlife park safety measures, a review of CCTV footage and action against anyone found negligent. The incident also highlights broader concerns about human-wildlife conflict and the risks faced by people who work inside or near animal enclosures. For Jaipur and surrounding villages, the immediate priority remains ensuring that workers can perform their duties without being exposed to preventable dangers.
