Doha Diplomacy Faces Early Test as US and Iran Disagree Over Peace Talks

Diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in West Asia are facing an early challenge after the United States and Iran presented conflicting versions of the next phase of negotiations in Doha, Qatar.

While U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that fresh high-level discussions could soon take place in Doha, Iranian officials have rejected that claim, insisting that no direct negotiations with the United States are currently scheduled. The differing statements have raised questions about the future of the peace process and the implementation of the recently announced interim memorandum of understanding.

US and Iran Offer Different Versions of Doha Talks

President Trump said an Iranian delegation had requested face-to-face talks in Qatar to advance the interim agreement aimed at lowering tensions across the region.

However, Tehran dismissed the claim, stating that its delegation is travelling to Doha only for technical discussions related to implementing the existing 14-point memorandum of understanding.

Iranian officials stressed that no direct political negotiations with U.S. representatives are planned at this stage.

Iran Links Future Talks to US Commitments

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran will continue implementing the agreement only if Washington fulfils its own commitments.

According to Iranian officials, these commitments include easing sanctions and facilitating the release of Iranian financial assets.

Tehran maintains that successful implementation of the current agreement must come before discussions on any broader or permanent peace arrangement.

Fragile Diplomatic Process

The conflicting public statements from Washington and Tehran highlight the fragile nature of ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Although the interim memorandum has reduced immediate military tensions, disagreements over the pace, scope, and structure of future negotiations continue to create uncertainty.

Regional observers say both sides remain cautious as they attempt to preserve the ceasefire while addressing longstanding political and security disputes.

Lebanon Ceasefire Proposal Faces Resistance

The uncertain diplomatic environment also comes as security concerns persist in Lebanon.

A U.S.-backed proposal seeking a longer-term ceasefire with Israel has faced criticism from Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, who argued that the proposal does not adequately safeguard Lebanon's interests.

One of the main points of disagreement is the proposal linking an Israeli military withdrawal to the disarmament of Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, fresh Israeli airstrikes have been reported in southern Lebanon, while Hezbollah has stated that it reserves the right to defend the country.

Regional Stability Hinges on Continued Dialogue

Analysts believe the coming weeks will be critical for the future of diplomacy in West Asia.

Successful implementation of the interim agreement and continued dialogue between the United States and Iran could help reduce regional tensions, while further disagreements risk slowing progress toward a broader peace settlement.
