India, New Zealand Elevate Ties to Strategic Partnership, Target ₹35,000 Crore Trade by 2030

India and New Zealand have elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership, marking a significant step toward strengthening cooperation in trade, defence, maritime security, and regional stability. The two countries have also set an ambitious goal of doubling bilateral trade in goods and services to ₹35,000 crore by 2030.

The announcement followed high-level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, with both leaders committing to expanding collaboration across multiple sectors through clear goals and practical initiatives.

Trade and Economic Cooperation Take Centre Stage

A major outcome of the discussions was the shared commitment to significantly increase two-way trade over the next five years. Both sides agreed to work toward achieving annual bilateral trade worth 7 billion New Zealand dollars (around ₹35,000 crore) by 2030.

The leaders also pledged to ensure the early implementation of the recently signed India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which is expected to strengthen market access, investment opportunities, and economic cooperation between the two nations.

Defence and Maritime Security Cooperation Expanded

India and New Zealand signed several agreements aimed at enhancing defence and security cooperation.

Among the key outcomes were a reciprocal logistics support agreement between the Indian Navy and the New Zealand Defence Force, along with a new framework for maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

Both countries also agreed to establish a dedicated Maritime Security Dialogue to improve coordination, information sharing, and regional maritime security.

Shared Vision for the Indo-Pacific

The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a free, open, inclusive, and rules-based Indo-Pacific.

They emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty, territorial integrity, freedom of navigation, and international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

India and New Zealand also highlighted the need to maintain secure global shipping routes and strengthen cooperation to promote regional peace and stability.

Leaders Discuss Global Security Challenges

During the talks, both leaders expressed concern over rising tensions in West Asia and called for restraint, dialogue, and diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation.

They also stressed the importance of ensuring uninterrupted maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz, describing global shipping routes as essential for economic stability and international commerce.

The discussions also covered the conflict in Ukraine, supply chain resilience, and energy security, with both countries emphasizing the importance of stable and transparent global trade networks.

Strong Stand Against Terrorism

India and New Zealand reaffirmed their commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms.

The two leaders strongly condemned recent terrorist attacks, including the attack in Pahalgam and the previous terror incident near Delhi's Red Fort. They called for those responsible to be held accountable and reiterated the importance of disrupting terrorist financing, dismantling safe havens, and adopting a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.

Strategic Partnership Expected to Deepen Bilateral Relations

The elevation of ties reflects the growing importance of India-New Zealand relations across economic, security, and strategic sectors.

With new agreements covering trade, defence, maritime cooperation, and regional security, both countries aim to build a stronger long-term partnership while contributing to peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
