Australia Reassures Indian Students, Says Stricter Visa Rules Won’t Limit Opportunities

Australia has assured India that stricter student visa screening will not reduce opportunities for genuine Indian students, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.

Speaking after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meetings with Australian leaders, Misri said both sides discussed concerns over changes in Australia's student visa process, including longer processing times and stricter scrutiny of applications.

He said Australia acknowledged that visa assessments have become more rigorous but emphasized that deserving Indian students would continue to have access to education opportunities.

No Ban on New Student Visa Applications

Misri dismissed reports claiming that Australia was planning to stop accepting new student visa applications from India.

He clarified that there is no truth to such reports and said Australian authorities have assured India that the tougher screening process is aimed at protecting the integrity of the visa system rather than limiting access for genuine students.

Australia Reaffirms Commitment to Indian Students

The Foreign Secretary expressed confidence that Australia will continue to welcome qualified Indian students and keep education pathways open.

He said student mobility remains a key pillar of India-Australia relations, and both countries remain committed to strengthening educational cooperation and people-to-people ties.

Australian PM Highlights Indian Community's Contribution

During the "Melbourne Meets Modi" community event, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the Indian community for its significant contribution to Australia's economy and society.

He said Indian professionals are helping address workforce shortages in sectors such as healthcare and information technology, while Indian entrepreneurs are supporting small businesses across the country.

Albanese also acknowledged the important role played by Indian students in Australia's education system, noting that many choose Australia, particularly the state of Victoria, for higher education and future career opportunities.
