India are preparing for the second Test against Sri Lanka with a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. The teams will meet at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on August 23, with India looking to seal the series with another strong performance.

One of the major talking points ahead of the match is India’s number three batting position. Former India cricketer Mohammed Kaif has backed Devdutt Padikkal to retain the position after his impressive performance in the opening Test.

Padikkal scored 167 runs from 230 deliveries in the first innings and played a major role in India’s 165-run victory. His performance also earned him the Player of the Match award and strengthened his case for a regular place in the top order.

Kaif Backs Padikkal Over Sudharsan

Kaif said Padikkal currently has an advantage because of the impact of his performance compared with Sai Sudharsan.

According to Kaif, Sudharsan has shown the ability to score useful half-centuries, but Padikkal’s ability to produce a major innings and influence the outcome of a match gives him an edge.

Kaif also highlighted the importance of having a batter who can support captain Shubman Gill while helping India remain competitive in the World Test Championship.

Padikkal’s 167-run knock has therefore added another dimension to India’s selection discussion. While Sudharsan remains an option, the Karnataka batter has made a strong argument for continuing at number three.

India Look to Seal Series in Colombo

India will enter the second Test with confidence after their comprehensive victory in the opening match. A second consecutive win would give Gill’s side a series triumph and strengthen their position in the World Test Championship race.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will look to respond strongly on home soil and prevent India from taking an unassailable lead.

With the number three position still attracting attention, Padikkal’s performance in Colombo could play an important role in determining India’s preferred batting combination for upcoming Tests.
