PM Modi’s BRICS Meetings Highlight India’s Growing Global Role

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met foreign ministers from BRICS nations in New Delhi during an important diplomatic gathering hosted under India’s 2026 BRICS presidency. The meeting brought together leaders from major developing economies at a time when the world is facing rising political tensions, economic uncertainty, and security challenges.

The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation among BRICS nations and increasing the role of developing countries in global decision-making. Foreign ministers from countries including Russia, Brazil, South Africa, Iran, and other partner nations attended the meeting.

The BRICS group was originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Over time, the bloc expanded to include more countries from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The expansion has increased the group’s global influence and strengthened its position as an important platform for developing economies.

India’s leadership of BRICS this year comes during a difficult period for the global economy. Conflicts in different parts of the world, rising energy prices, trade disputes, and economic slowdown have created pressure on governments worldwide. During the meeting, leaders discussed the need for stronger international cooperation to deal with these challenges.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of unity among developing nations and stressed the need for reforms in global institutions. India has repeatedly argued that international organisations should better represent emerging economies and the Global South.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also addressed the gathering and spoke about the growing expectations from BRICS during a time of global uncertainty. According to Indian officials, the meeting focused on resilience, sustainability, innovation, and economic cooperation among member nations.

One of the important topics discussed during the talks was the situation in West Asia. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East have raised concerns over energy supplies, shipping routes, and global trade stability. India stressed the importance of safe maritime trade routes because many countries depend heavily on uninterrupted global trade for economic growth.

The meeting also reflected India’s growing diplomatic influence. By hosting BRICS leaders and foreign ministers, New Delhi is trying to strengthen its position as a major voice for developing countries. India’s foreign policy in recent years has focused on balancing relations with both Western nations and emerging global powers.

However, BRICS also faces internal challenges. Member countries do not always agree on major international issues, and political differences sometimes make joint decisions difficult. As the group expands, managing these differences may become more complicated in the future.

Despite these challenges, the New Delhi meeting showed that BRICS continues to grow in importance in global politics. Many developing nations now see the bloc as an alternative platform for cooperation, trade, and international dialogue outside traditional power structures.
