NCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance of Kerala Student’s Murder in Uzbekistan

National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of the reported torture and murder of a 21-year-old medical student from Kerala in Uzbekistan. The Commission expressed deep concern over allegations that the student was subjected to physical assault, harassment and an attempted forced religious conversion before her death.

The incident has drawn national attention, prompting the NCW to seek immediate action from law enforcement authorities and Indian diplomatic officials to ensure a thorough investigation and justice for the victim.

NCW Writes to Kerala DGP

The Commission has written to the Director General of Police (DGP), Kerala, directing authorities to conduct an expeditious investigation into the case. It has also asked the state police to coordinate closely with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Indian Embassy in Tashkent to ensure effective cooperation with authorities in Uzbekistan.

In its communication, the NCW has requested that all available evidence related to the case be preserved and that every effort be made to support the legal investigation.

Action Taken Report Sought Within Seven Days

The NCW has sought an Action Taken Report (ATR) from the Kerala DGP within seven days, seeking details of the progress made in the investigation and the steps taken to coordinate with central authorities.

The Commission has emphasised the importance of ensuring a transparent investigation while extending all possible assistance to the victim's family during the legal process.

Indian Embassy Asked to Extend Assistance

The NCW has also written to the Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan, requesting the Embassy to provide all necessary support to the victim's family and coordinate with local authorities to facilitate legal proceedings.

The Commission has urged the Embassy to ensure effective communication between Indian officials and Uzbek authorities so that the investigation progresses without unnecessary delays.

Demand for Justice Grows

The tragic death of the young medical student has sparked widespread concern, with many calling for a fair and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities are expected to continue working with diplomatic channels to establish the facts of the case and ensure that all legal procedures are followed. Further updates are expected as investigations continue in both India and Uzbekistan.
