BJP Rejects Congress Allegations Against Amit Shah Over FCRA Bill

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dismissed allegations made by the Congress against Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the proposed Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Bill, 2026, describing the accusations as baseless and politically motivated.

The political exchange follows criticism from the Congress over the government's handling of the proposed amendments to the FCRA framework.

Congress Raises Concerns Over FCRA Amendments

Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal alleged that the government was using the FCRA to target civil society organisations and minority-run institutions.

He also accused the government of deflecting responsibility over concerns raised regarding the proposed legislation and its implementation.

BJP Says Allegations Lack Merit

Responding to the claims, BJP MP and party spokesperson Sambit Patra rejected the allegations, stating that the Opposition was spreading misinformation about the proposed amendments.

Patra said the accusations were politically motivated and maintained that the proposed legislation would be debated in Parliament, where all facts would be presented.

Catholic Bishops Seek Wider Consultation

The debate comes after the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) urged the government to withdraw the proposed FCRA Bill and recently notified rules, requesting that they be redrafted following broader consultations with stakeholders.

The organisation expressed concerns over the potential impact of the proposed provisions on religious and civil society institutions.

FCRA Bill Expected to Be Debated in Parliament

The proposed FCRA Bill, 2026 is expected to be introduced in Parliament, where lawmakers are likely to discuss its provisions and the concerns raised by political parties and civil society groups.

The legislation has already triggered debate over foreign funding regulations, transparency, and the balance between national security and the functioning of non-governmental organisations.
